春 テニスン

「今日の詩」から拾ったテニスンの「春」という詩である。私はついぞ知らなかったが、シューベルトの「美しき水車小屋の娘」に匹敵する英語の歌曲集を作らないかという話が持ち上がった。そのために詩人テニスンが歌曲を意識した詩集を書き、作曲家サリヴァンが付曲することになった。また画家ミレイも詩集に挿絵を描き、出版された。「春」は歌曲集「窓」の五番目の詩である。

前回のシェークスピアの詩のように、英語は簡単であり、気分はよく分かる。単純な詩ほど直訳すると日本語にならないから結構気をつかう。私の不足がちの日本語の語彙では、単純明快に「春」の気分を表現するのは難しい作業だった。情報が抜け落ちた感じで、出来栄えは気に入らない。

それに文化の違いに注意しなければいけない。西欧では「鶯」が珍重されていないのは知っているが、 wren という鳥がそんなに格が高いとは知らなかった。辞書を調べると「ミソサザイ」とある。漢字で書くと「鷯」と難しい。私には馴染みがないが、ケルトの伝説では「鳥の王」とのこと。テニスンが韻律上の都合で採用した鳥ではない。ここでは学術名ミソサザイは少しうるさい感じなのでサザイとした。

テニスン

外韻に多少の努力はしたが、やはり言語の音の響きをそのまま外国語に変換するのは難しかった。なお原詩同様に音節数に統一性を持たせるべく配慮した。

テニスン

今回のテニスンの詩は脚韻が無い。行末が -ing で終わっているが、これは通常韻とは看做されない。これが韻文であるならば、誰も苦労はしない。英詩ではアクセントがなければ、最終音節は韻を踏んでいるとはみなされない。テニスンはこの詩で外韻と内韻のお手本を示してくれたと思う。今回のテーマは「こだま」である。すなわちいつまでも続く音の連続性を表現するわけであるから、韻文の響きにも連続性がなくてはならない。効果的な手法が外韻と内韻である。彼はさらに、一部盛り上がった行を除いて８音節に纏めている。脚韻はなくとも形式性を重視した作品である。

外韻とは：音節の通常最初の音素が同一である場合、外韻が成立しているとみなす。「こだま」は音の繰り返しであるから、この詩にも繰り返しがあるのが、外韻と内韻が成立するが、自明であるあるので除く事にする。

愛しき君の埋葬 -- テニスン

「今日の詩」もテニスンの「愛しき君の埋葬」である。ロマン派の完成者であるテニスンが当時流行の中世趣味に合わせた詩であろう。すでによく似た詩としては「姫君の騎士の亡骸が戻ってきた」がある。それとも「アーサー王の死」あたりに収録されているエピソードであろうか。

韻文であるが構造がそれほど幾何学的には見えなかった。目立つ同韻としては30行中 [unfed, shed, head, dead, sped, deathbed, dead] の７語である。あとは一対の例外を除いて、綺麗に対が取れている。エミリー・ディキンソンなら合格だが、桂冠詩人としてはどうかと思われる [joy, apathy] である。

The Burial of Love

His eyes in eclipse,

テニスン

絵はイギリス生まれの画家 Charles Farrer の” Gone! Gone! ”という感傷的な絵である。美術評論家ジョン・ラスキンの影響を受けたとされるが、アメリカに帰化したのか判然としない。
