マウスのＶも自然環境の厳しさを描写している。この期に及んでだが、マウスとは詩人のような生産的でない生物に対する憐憫の情かもしれないと思うようになった。あと三詩節残されているから楽しみである。 Thou saw the fields laid bare an’ waste, An’ weary winter comin fast, An’ cozie here, beneath the blast, Thou thought to dwell― Till crash! the cruel coulter past Out thro’ thy cell.
