ヴィクトリア朝の最後を飾る帝国主義者キプリングの有名な詩「東と西の物語」を三回に分けて投稿する予定である。「東は東、西は西」で始まる有名な詩であるが、これが一人歩きして使われている。キプリングの差別的な見解は「東は東、西は西」と容易に結びつく。東と西は所詮相容れないから征服しなければならない、というのはキプリングの思想かもしれない。だがこの詩でキプリングは帝国主義思想を主張してはいない。 一言で言えば、英雄伝説の伝統を帝国主義時代に当てはめた詩である。やはり作品を読まずにキプリングを語るのは危険である。時代の雰囲気を的確な韻文証言する。彼の才能は疑う余地が無いが、見事であるだけにやはりキプリングは危険な人物なのかなというのが私の印象である。とにかく複雑な人である。韻文形式の短編小説を読むようである。 The Ballad of East and West I Till Earth and Sky stand presently at God’s great Judgment Seat; But there is neither East nor West, Border, nor Breed, nor Birth, When two strong men stand face to face, tho’ they come from the ends of the earth! 今日の詩はキプリングの「ウィンザーの後家さん」である。夫君アルバート公に先立たれたヴィクトリア女王のことである。七つの海を支配する女王様にお使えする兵隊たちの歌である。コクニー訛りが強烈である。＜'＞が単語の最初に登場したら＜h＞か＜t＞ で置き換える。最後に来たらまず＜g＞で置き換えることにしたが、＜f＞や＜d＞もあり、戸惑うこともあった。兵隊が読んで分かる詩であるから、易しい詩であろうが誤訳皆無ということはありえない気がした。 The Widow at Windsor 'Ave you 'eard o' the Widow at Windsor

「今日の詩」はキップリングの「トミー」である。「トミー」はイギリス兵のことをさす。彼らのトレード・マークが伝統的に赤い制服であった。ワーテルローの戦いやクリミア戦争の記録画で確認される。 その兵隊達が外出を許可されたときの様子をキップリングは描写している。文中に色んな行進曲が登場するが、よく分からない。イギリスの軍隊オタクの人に聞くほかはない。 Tommy I went into a public-'ouse to get a pint o' beer, The publican 'e up an' sez, "We serve no red-coats here."
