マリアンヌ・ムーアはルイ十五世様式の蝋燭立て(candelabrum)を見ている。蝋燭立ては機能（液体を受け止める）からも、形態からも宮殿の噴水に類似する。この燭台に嵌め込まれた陶磁器製の白鳥の優雅さには自然の白鳥も敵わない。 No Swan so Fine "No water so still as the dead fountains of Versailles." No swan, with swart blind look askance and gondoliering legs, so fine as the chintz china one with fawn- brown eyes and toothed gold collar on to show whose bird it was. アメリカのモダニストMarianne Mooreの詩。「ラピスラズリ」の一言で、青く美しい海と高貴な死を語る。韻文詩である。 A Talisman Under a splintered mast, torn from the ship and cast near her hull, a stumbling shepherd found embedded in the ground, a sea-gull of lapis lazuli, a scarab of the sea, with wings spread - curling its coral feet, parting its break to greet men long dead.
