オールド・ロビン５ -- アン・バーナード

語数の制限に引っかかってしまった。日本語訳だけ掲載する。


日本語訳

前回までは直訳調の和訳をこころみたが、もう少し分かりやすい日本語を心がけた。読みやすい日本語といっても、朗読して聞きやすい日本語ではとうていない。ここで auld Robin Gray　はオールド・ロビン・グレイと訳すことにした。オールドが名前の一部になっているからである。オールド・ブラック・ジョーと同じである。


オールド・ロビン・グレイ

羊は囲いの中、雌牛はみな家の中、
みなは疲れて眠りについた。
私は悲しくて目から涙が流れているのに、
旦那さんはとなりでやすらかに寝ている。

ジェイミーは私が大好きで、お嫁にしたかった。
彼には１クラウンの貯えしかなかった。
１クラウンを１ポンドにしようとジェイミーは海に出た。
クラウンもポンドも私のために。

彼がでかけてたった二日目のこと、
母さんは病気になり、雌牛は盗まれてしまう。
おまけに父さんは腕を折り、―　ジェイミーは海の彼方。
そこへオールド・ロビン・グレイが私をもらいにきた。

父さんは働けないし、母さんは糸を紡げない、
私は一日中精を出しても、食べていけなかった。
オールド・ロブは二人を食べさせ、目には涙をうかべて
言った。「ジェニー、両親のためにもなる、私と結婚しておくれ！」

私はいやだった。ジェイミーの帰りを待った。
でも風が吹き荒れ、あの船は難破した。
船が難破し、ジェイミーが生きているはずはない。
一生泣いてくらすのだろうか、ああ悲しい！

父さんはいらいらして私をせかし、母さんは黙っていたけど
私の顔をじっとみつめる、私の心は張り裂けそう。
私の心は海にあったのに、両親は彼との結婚をきめた。
こうしてオールド・ロビン・グレイは私の旦那さんになった。

私が奥さんになってたった４日目のこと、
私は悲しそうに入り口の石に座っていた。
私はジェイミーの幽霊を見た。−彼とは思えなかったもの、
彼が「きみと結婚するためにもどってきたよ」いうまで。

ああ、きまずい、私たちはあいさつして長いこと話をした。
私たちは一度だけキスをしてから、私は彼に行ってくれと頼んだ。
死んでしまいたいけど、私には死ぬ気力もない。
なぜ私は生まれてきたの！ああ悲しい！

私は幽霊のように歩き、糸を紡ぐ気にもならなかった。
でもジェイミーのことを考えるのはよそう。それは罪だもの。
やはり努力していつまでも良い奥さんになろう。
だってオールド・ロビン・グレイは私にやさしいもの。

その後さらに見慣れぬ単語の数が多い版が見つかった。これがアン・バーナードのオリジナルなのか、それとも彼女のオリジナルにさらにスコッチ風味を出すために誰かが書き換えたのかは判然としないが、英語研究者ではない私にはどうでもいいことである。

スコットランド語の語数は多いので物珍しさは増す。一応これをオリジナルとすることにした。たとえば motherは mitherになっている。若干表現が変わっているところもあるが、内容的には同じである。それにしても本来のスコットランド語はどうなったのだろう。すこし大きな辞書さえあれば文法書はいらなくて言語といえるのだろうか。

それにしてもアン・バーナードのバラードに類似した話は多い。彼女がこの種の物語の元祖であろうか。ギリシャ・ローマの時代にさかのぼる原型はないのだろうか。三島由紀夫の「潮騒」の原型がギリシャ人の作品「ダフニスとクローエ」であるように。

前にこのバラードは付曲されていると紹介したが、ゆっくりと感情を込めてという指示があった。なるほど。

When the sheep are in the fauld, and the kye a' at hame,
When a' the weary warld to sleep are gane,
The waes o' my heart fa' in showers frae my e'e,
While my gudeman lies sound by me.

Young Jamie lo'ed me weel, and sought me for his bride;
But saving a croun he had naething else beside.
To mak the croun a pound, my Jamie gaed to sea,
And the croun and the pound, they were baith for me.

He hadna been awa' a week but only twa,
When my mither she fell sick and the cow was stown awa';
My faither brak his arm - my Jamie at the sea;

But the wind it blew hie, and the ship it was a wrack;
His ship it was a wrack - why didna Jamie dee?
And why do I live to cry, Wae's me?

My faither urged me sair; my mither didna speak,
But she looked in my face till my heart was like to break.
They gied him my hand - my heart was at the sea;
Sae auld Robin Gray, he was gudeman to me.

現代英語訳

訳とはいっても、スコットランドの単語を英単語に置き換えただけである。この詩で私がはじめてお目にかかったのは、my mither sheとか my faither he という構成である。これはスコットランド風あるいは古風な文章にするために重要な構成なのか、たんに調子を整えるためのものか分からなかった。また英語の専門家に聞いておこう。
