「今日の詩」の選者は女性である。女性詩人のブラウニング夫人とエミリー・ディキンソンが目立つ。今日の詩はそのブラウニング夫人の “Past And Future” 「過去と未来」である。自分の未来は天国で食事をすることであり、現世での欲望を満たすことではない。自然には慎ましいが、癒しがあり、天国で天使と食事するまではそれで充分という。 この詩は一行１０音節で、弱強格のきれいなソネット形式に従っているが、時々彼女の詩に感ずる懲りすぎた技巧が感じられない。やはり彼女はヴィクトリア朝を代表する詩人である。 Past And Future My future will not copy fair my past On any leaf but Heaven's. 「今日の詩」の選者が送ってきたのはブラウニング夫人の “Minstrelsy” 邦題を「詩作」とした。私が苦手のブラウニング夫人である。ヴィクトリア朝の詩壇を代表する才女の彼女は技巧派である。その技巧を意識すればその分「解読」だけは容易になる。今日の詩は６詩節、１詩節８行であり、各詩節最後の２行は不完全韻であるが、７行目は why で終わり、８行目はすべて “I have delight in minstrelsy” で繰り返される。最初の６行は隣り合わせの脚韻は同韻、すなわち英雄韻になっている。私はこの詩をブラウニングへの恋の歌と解釈して訳した。 格調は弱強格のお手本のような詩である。 Minstrelsy For ever, since my childish looks Could rest on Nature's pictured books; For ever, since my childish tongue Could name the themes our bards have sung; So long, the sweetness of their singing Hath been to me a rapture bringing! Yet ask me not the reason why I have delight in minstrelsy. I know that much whereof I sing, Is shapen but for vanishing; I know that summer's flower and leaf And shine and shade are very brief, And that the heart they brighten, may, Before them all, be sheathed in clay! -- I do not know the reason why I have delight in minstrelsy. 「今日の詩」の選者は久しぶりにブラウニング夫人の詩を送ってきた。題名は “Comfort” 「慰め」と訳した。彼女は念願かなってブラウニングとイタリアに逃避行し、４３歳で一児を高齢出産した。１９世紀のことである。生来虚弱であった彼女には死と隣り合わせの出産と育児であった。そんな彼女の神への祈りを想像しながら、優しい神と育児する母親を重ね合わせた詩と勝手に解釈した。知性派の彼女の詩はきわめて技巧的でもあり、ときとして日本語にするのが難しい。私の苦手の詩人である。 Comfort Speak low to me, my Saviour, low and sweet From out the hallelujahs, sweet and low Lest I should fear and fall, and miss Thee so Who art not missed by any that entreat. Speak to mo as to Mary at thy feet! 「今日の詩」の選者が昨晩送ってきたのはブラウニング夫人の “The Weakest Thing” 「一番弱い物」である。今日のブラウニング夫人は妙に悲観的である。もっとも詩人の陽と陰は真に受けてはいけない。会心作が出来れば上機嫌になるはず。彼女は大変な技巧の持ち主である。彼女は英語で始めて成功した詩形の栄誉の持ち主である。 今日の詩の構造は奇数行が８音節、偶数行が５音節である。一詩節８行であるが韻の構造は [a, b, a, b, c, d, c, d] となっている。 The Weakest Thing Which is the weakest thing of all Mine heart can ponder? The sun, a little cloud can pall With darkness yonder? The cloud, a little wind can move Where'er it listeth? The wind, a little leaf above, Though sere, resisteth? What time that yellow leaf was green, My days were gladder; But now, whatever Spring may mean, I must grow sadder. 「今日の詩」は昨日送られてきたブラウニング夫人の “The Lady's Yes” 「女のハイ」である。苦手の詩人だが、エミリー・ディキンソンが崇拝する詩人の一人。エミリーを読んでいたせいか、今回は訳しやすかった。ブラウニングとの関係で作詩したものかどうかは制作年が不明なので分からない。間違いなく両者に共通点がある。 今回の詩は強弱格(trochee)を意識したものである。すでに彼女は「愛してね」で試みている。その時は７音節と６音節の繰り返しで作詩している。今回は７音節で終始している。すなわち （強、弱、強、弱、強、弱、強）で終始したかったようである。これは当然であろう。韻文であるので、最後に強が来る必要があるからである。「愛してね」の場合、６行の所で同じ単語を繰り返したのはともかく、- ing を行末に使っている。これはヴィクトリア朝では韻とみなされなかったものである。今夏の「女のハイ」も「愛してね」も命令形の行が多い。完全とはいえないが、ほぼ強弱格が成立していることを示すために、強勢のある部分を太字で表記した版を付け足した。参考になれば幸である。さらに一箇所を除き韻の対が取れており、彼女が大変な技巧の持ち主であることを証明している。韻の構造は [a, b, a, b]である。 絵はイギリスの画家ラファエル前派の Arthur Hughes (アーサー・ヒューズ)作「長い婚約」である。 The Lady's Yes "Yes," I answered you last night; "No," this morning, Sir, I say.
