「今日の詩」はブレイクのバラッド「夜」である。寓意であることは承知しているが、ライオンが神の子羊であるキリストの教えに従い、草を食み、羊を守るようになるというお話。詩の構造は [a, b, a, b, c, c]で全詩節統一されている。詩の形式に縛られて無理をしている感じはあまりしない。 大真面目にこのような世界の到来を告げたと解釈できる箇所が聖書にあるらしい。ピューリタンの画家ヒックスが描いた絵がある。上の絵では、百獣が仲良くし、入植者とインディアンが友好的である。今日はこの興味深い絵も鑑賞して頂きたい。 Night The sun descending in the west, The evening star does shine; The birds are silent in their nest, And I must seek for mine. The moon, like a flower, In heaven's high bower, With silent delight Sits and smiles on the night. Farewell, green fields and happy groves, Where flocks have took delight. Where lambs have nibbled, silent moves The feet of angels bright; Unseen they pour blessing, And joy without ceasing, On each bud and blossom, And each sleeping bosom. 「今日の詩」はウィリアム・ブレイクの「人の悲しみ」である。エミリー・ディキンソンが崇拝したとされる詩人であるが、どうも面白い詩に出会えなかった。エミリーの父親の検閲を通り、読むことが許された詩人ぐらいに思っていた。たしかに彼女とブレイクの類似性はようやく納得できた。彼女は少なくとも形式的にはブレイクの影響を受けていたのだろう。 On Another's Sorrow Can I see another's woe, And not be in sorrow too? Can I see another's grief, And not seek for kind relief? Can I see a falling tear, And not feel my sorrow's share? Can a father see his child Weep, nor be with sorrow filled? Can a mother sit and hear An infant groan, an infant fear? No, no! never can it be! Never, never can it be! 「今日の詩」はブレイクの「わが麗しきバラ」である。選者はさかんにエミリー・ディキンソンとブレイクの詩を送ってくる。エミリーには崇拝する詩人が二人いたが、その一人がブレイクである。エミリーの詩とブレイクの詩を読んでいるうちに、彼女が影響を受けたという事実は了解できた。業者の短い詩には類似性がある。 My Pretty Rose Tree A flower was offered to me, Such a flower as May never bore; But I said "I've a pretty rose tree," And I passed the sweet flower o'er. Then I went to my pretty rose tree, To tend her by day and by night; But my rose turned away with jealousy, And her thorns were my only delight. 「今日の詩」はウィリアム・ブレイクの「笑って歌おう」である。私のブレイクの絵画には大変興味があるが、私が最初に出会った詩の印象は良くなかった。たった２本の詩で判断してはいけないが、何のひねりもなく、他愛ないような気がした。 Laughing Song When the green woods laugh with the voice of joy, And the dimpling stream runs laughing by; When the air does laugh with our merry wit, And the green hill laughs with the noise of it; when the meadows laugh with lively green, And the grasshopper laughs in the merry scene, When Mary and Susan and Emily With their sweet round mouths sing "Ha, ha he!" When the painted birds laugh in the shade, Where our table with cherries and nuts is spread: Come live, and be merry, and join with me, To sing the sweet chorus of "Ha, ha, he!" 神秘的な宗教画で知られるブレイク、彼の詩を読んだのは初めてである。理由は「今日の詩」が昨日送ってきたからである。まあ実に１９世紀的ではあるが、まあこれが詩というものであろう。 |
