靜夜思

牀前看月光
疑是地上霜
擧頭望山月
低頭思故郷

Leaving the Baidi Wall

Purple was the morn when I left the clouded Wall behind.
The torrents lead me hundreds miles far away to Jingling.
Between dark cliffs the gorge echoed monkeys shrieking.
Mount after mount my boat was sailing before a fair wind.

相も変らぬ韻遊びであるが、昨晩考え続けてここらで当分考えないことにした。起承転結という絶句の作法が分かってはいるわけではないが、一応時間の経過と場面の変化を表したつもりである。この一年で覚えたことの一つに詩の世界では wind はウィンドだけではなく、ワインドとも読むことができるということである。すなわち behind と wind は対になるということである。

内心三行目の猿の鳴き声で、昼なお暗き秘境を表現したかった。この行に拘ったために振り回された感じである。四行目は少し川幅が広くなったことを、原作にはないが、順風を登場させ、帆をはってスピード感を出させたつもりである。一行目は少しましになっただろうか。出だしが肝心であるが、現段階ではこれ以上は望めない。二行目は弱いし改善の余地があるが、しばらく凍結することにしよう。

両岸の猿声　啼いて盡きず
軽舟已に過ぐ　万重の山


今回の韻遊びはかなりやりにくい漢詩である。それでもかなりの組み合わせの余地は残されている。最後になるべく短い単語を持ってくるのが定石である。私は白帝城を見たわけではない。Castle と Wall の選択では　Wall の方がよい。猿の call と対を組むことができる。shriek だと peak と対を組むしかない。地名の Jiangling は動詞の進行形とついになりうるし、白帝の Baidi は ly で終わる副詞と組むこともでき中国語の固有名詞は意外に使い道はある。

I set up one day journey on the torrent for Jiangling.
Between precipices monkeys' shriek echoed aloud.

もうこれ以上恥をさらすのはやめよう。いずれにしても比較的不自然でない例は極めてまれである。

I left the Baidi Castle cloudy in the purple and gold morning.
The torrent rushed my boat far away by nightfall to Jiangling.
Between dark precipices echoed monkeys' shrieking salute.
My light boat was passing by mount after mount in a minute.

今回ブログを始めてから、七言絶句（seven-character quatrain)の英訳で初めて長さが（ほぼ）完全に一致した。これは翻訳を正当化するものではないが、ちょっと面白かった。もちろん morning と Jiangling　は true rhyme にはなっていない。morning の第一シラブルにアクセントがあるからである。中国の固有名詞は韻を踏むには結構使い道があることは知っていたが、うまくいかないものである。改訂何版かしらないが、しばらくほかの詩想を考えることにしよう。purple and gold は other_wind さんが紹介されたバイロン卿の The Destruction of Sennacherib の朝焼けの光景の描写から拝借している。６月８日

対酒不覚暝
落花盈我衣
醉起歩溪月
鳥還人亦稀

酒に対して暝るるを覚えず

Self-Indulgence

I’ve drunk too much to notice the twilight nearing,
And found my cloth fully covered with fallen blooms
Awakened, I walked with the moon along the combe.
Birds back to roost, while I have few villagers seen.
