「今日の詩」の選者が送ってきた詩はスコットの「ロキンヴァー」である。恋人の結婚式を聞き勇者ロッキンヴァーが結婚式場に乗り込んで花嫁を略奪してくる話である。この詩は英語圏の中学生の教材であり、英米人は古めかしい詩形が懐かしいらしい。ロキンヴァーは地名であるが、人名にもなっている。その他固有名詞のカタカナ表記は自信がない。アーサー王伝説を読んでいないので、この種の古風な英語は難しい。 "Lochinvar" O young Lochinvar is come out of the west, Through all the wide Border his steed was the best; And save his good broadsword he weapons had none. He rode all unarm'd, and he rode all alone. So faithful in love, and so dauntless in war, There never was knight like the young Lochinvar He staid not for brake, and he stopped not for stone. He swam the Eske river where ford there was none; But ere he alighted at Netherby gate, The bride had consented, the gallant came late: For a laggard in love, and a dastard in war, Was to wed the fair Ellen of brave Lochinvar. Scott ロキンヴァー 若きロキンヴァーは西の方より 境界地方一の駿馬を御して来る。 身に帯びたるは幅広の太刀のみ。 鎧も付けず、従う騎士とてなし。 誠実なる愛情と不屈の敢闘精神 若きロキンヴァーに勝る騎士はなし。 茂みに寄らず、岩にも止まらず 瀬なきエスキ川を泳ぎ渡る。 ネサビーの城門に降り立つ前に 花嫁は承諾し、若騎士は遅れた。 恋に不器用で、戦で臆病な男が ロキンヴァーの麗しきエレンと挙式の手筈。 勇んで入場したネサビーの広間に 居並ぶ、介添、親戚、兄弟の面々。 花嫁の父は刀に手を掛けて言う （意気地なしの花婿は黙ったまま） 「穏やかな話かな？物騒な話かな？ 婚礼の舞踏にみえましたかな、ロキンヴァー？ 長く姫君を求め、貴殿に拒否された。 愛はソルウェイの潮、引いては寄せる− 叶わぬ恋なのに当地に参りました。 誓いの酒を乾す作法を行わんため。 数多のスコットランドの美女は この殿御の花嫁になりたいはず。 花嫁が口触れた杯を騎士は受けた。 騎士は杯を一気に乾し投げ捨てた。 花嫁は目下げて顔赤らめ、目上げて嘆息した。 花嫁の唇には笑みが、目には涙が。 母親が止める前に花嫁の手を取り‐ 「もう作法はやめよう！」とロキンヴァー。 体躯頑健にして、顔麗しき騎士。 広間はかってかかる勇士を招かず。 母親はやきもきし、父親は怒り 花嫁の帽子の羽根毛は揺れ動き 花嫁のお付らは囁く「ずっといいわ ロキンヴァーの若殿が似合いよ」。 花嫁の手に接吻し、耳元に囁き 二人が城門に寄ると近づく軍馬。 軽々と麗しき姫君を後ろに乗せ 軽々と自身は馬の鞍に飛び乗り！ 「僕のもの！堤も藪も岩も越えるぞ。 追っ手の馬が来るはず」とロキンヴァー。 馬が大勢駆けて来るぞ、ネサビー族のグリーム フォルスター、フェンウィック、マスグレイブ。 キャノビー・リーで逃走と追跡、だが ネサビーの奪われた花嫁を遂に見ず。 恋で大胆、戦で無敵のロキンヴァー これほどの勇士がどこにいよう？ スコット

Scott 和訳大意 シダに寄るのは微風だけ。 水面には大きな波はなく 大鷲は巣で居眠りをし 雄鹿は空腹を満たしていた。 鱒は底から動こうとせず だが恐ろしい雷雲が現れ 真紅の覆いで巻きつく ベン・レディの丘は見事。 スコット 私は語学力不足であるのに、一行の音節数を整えようとして原詩の内容を変えた。「微風すら吹かない」というのがスコットの原意であるが、「微風」を許してしまった。その結果、凪いで波一つない光景が、大きな波は無いということになった。もう一度同じ音節数で表現できないものか、再考察するつもりであるが、今日の所は恥を覚悟で投稿することにした。英語とドイツ語は血を分けた兄弟であるが、フランス語に大きく影響された。生みの親より育ての親というが、今日の仏訳には参った。 また訳詩の内容が不正確なことは承知の上だが、形式的にはどうであろうか。フランスの詩の韻は気を付けなければいけない。これではたして正統なフランスの詩の韻を踏んだことになるのか。

Scott 独訳大意 森には微風も吹かず 水面には小波も立たず 海鷲は巣で眠り始め 鹿は茂みを求めて歩く。 小鳥は歌おうともせず 鱒は泳ぐのも大儀 雷雲が沸き起こり まるで紫衣を纏うよう 遥かなベン・レディ山。 スコット この詩はスコットの長大な韻文叙事詩 Lady of the Lake(湖上の美人)の一節であり、以前に夏の季節に合わせて紹介したことがある。今回の訳詩でも、原詩の韻を踏んでいる箇所はそのまま韻を踏むようにした。近いとはいっても、英語とドイツ語は違う。訳しきれなかった点を挙げることにする。 彼の韻文は８音節と６音節で構成され、同韻の行は音節数も同じである。英語の場合、名詞が単数であろうと複数であろうと、音節数が変わる例は少ない。ドイツ語では形容詞が変化するし、名詞が主語の場合は特に行全体に影響する。それでも今回は韻と音節数に注意して訳した。 結果として音節数はすべて８音節にした。それによって煩わしくなった行はにないと信じている。「湖面」を「水面」にしたが、一部原作の「孕み鱒」は「鱒」にせざるを得なかった。この箇所は原作者がわざと付け加えたとは思えない。重要な情報の欠落である。今後さらに原作の６音節の部分の訳も圧縮できないか考えてみる。 写真はスコットランドの山 Ben Ledi である。スコットランドでは高地かもしれないが、雪が積もっているからには明らかに夏ではないし、雷雲もない。だがスコットの詩でさらに有名になったそうである。夏のBen Ledi を想像していただきたい。
