革命の闘士クラッフが友に捧げたと思われる詩。死後発表された。友は男性以外にも女性が考えられる。私の知識では三人の女性が上げられる。女子教育に情熱を注いだ姉のアン・ジェミナ・クラッフ(Anne Jemima Clough)のことかもしれない。妻 ブランチ・エリー・ショア・スミス(Blanche Mary Shore Smith)はナイチンゲールの従妹である。さらにはフローレンス・ナイチンゲールFlorence Nightingale 1820-1910)も候補である。彼はナイチンゲールの秘書として無報酬で献身的に彼女の活動を支えてきた。題名の訳はちょっと気にいらないが、ヤコブの書簡から引用されたものであるからそのまま転用する。 With Whom is no Variableness, Neither Shadow of Turning It fortifies my soul to know That, though I perish, Truth is so: That, howsoe'er I stray and range, Whate'er I do, Thou dost not change. クラッフ(1819 –1861)は１８４８年から１８４９年にかけての大陸での騒乱を期待して見守った一人である。注釈によれば、１８５５年にアメリカの雑誌に投稿されたとある。革命の成り行きに失望した友人に語りかける形式である。四歩格で脚韻の構造はＡＢＡＢである。 Say not the struggle nought availeth, Say not the struggle nought availeth, The labour and the wounds are vain, The enemy faints not nor faileth, And as things have been, things remain; If hopes were dupes, fears may be liars; It may be, in yon smoke conceal'd, Your comrades chase e'en now the fliers-- And, but for you, possess the field. そもそも Qua Cursum Ventus という原題からしてラテン語である。オックスフォードの学生には自然なのだろうが、ラテン語の素養のない私はさっぱり自信がなかった。また韻律を重視して、単語の配列が私の知識と食い違い、戸惑う箇所があった。この詩の韻律を検討してみると弱強格を意識していたらしい。そうすると納得できる言葉の配列があり、語義があった。 幸い注釈を見つけた。１８４９年にロンドンで出版された詩集にあるという。注釈によれば、原題はほぼ「風が吹くと」と訳してよかろうとのこと。オックスフォードで風が吹き荒れたことを指す。オックスフォード大学の学園紛争で、多くの学生の長年の友情が破綻した。詳しくはないが、いわゆるオックスフォード運動である。イギリス国教会の神学上の問題で争ったそうで学生は大変だったろう。この事件を船団の航海に喩えた詩である。 みな仲良くし、同じ理想を抱いていた。これは船団の航海である。暗闇の中コンパスと自分の信念でひたすら進航し、いつの間にか船は仲間とはぐれてしまう。詩人は、最後に船が大海原で再会することは無理だとしても、無事に帰港できるよう、風と海に託して結んでいる。 Qua Cursum Ventus As ships, becalmed at eve, that lay With canvas drooping, side by side, Two towers of sail at dawn of day Are scarce long leagues apart descried; When fell the night, upsprung the breeze, And all the darkling hours they plied, Nor dreamt but each the self-same seas By each was cleaving, side by side: Even so--but why the tale reveal Of those whom, year by year unchanged, Brief absence joined anew, to feel, Astounded, soul from soul estranged? 昨日から解読始めたクラッフの詩「ペルチェ・ペンサ？ペンサンド・シンベッキア」はますます社会主義的であり、マシュー・アーノルドとは相容れない思想の持ち主であることを物語っている。この詩は死後に発表されているが、アーノルドは読んでいるはずである。 Perché Pensa? Pensando s'Invecchia To spend uncounted years of pain, Again, again, and yet again, In working out in heart and brain The problem of our being here; To gather facts from far and near, Upon the mind to hold them clear, And, knowing more may yet appear, Unto one's latest breath to fear The premature result to draw— Is this the object, end and law, And purpose of our being here? アーサー・ヒュー・クラッフ(1819-1861)の単純明快な海の詩。彼は何度も海を渡っている。彼の爽快な詩は始めてである。 Where lies the land to which the ship would go? Where lies the land to which the ship would go? Far, far ahead, is all her seamen know. And where the land she travels from? Away, Far, far behind, is all that they can say. On sunny noons upon the deck's smooth face, Linked arm in arm, how pleasant here to pace!
