レイク島 ―― エズラ・パウンド

パウンドの「レイク島」” The Lake Isle” という詩はイェーツの” Lake Isle of Innisfree” （インニス島のパロディーだそうである。そう言われればそんな気もする。一度訳して投稿したことがある。あまり記憶に残っていない詩である。イェーツは自然への憧憬を韻文でうたうが、パウンドは安易な下町での生活を自由韻律詩でうたう。

The Lake Isle

O God, O Venus, O Mercury, patron of thieves,
Give me in due time, I beseech you, a little tobacco-shop,
With the little bright boxes
Piled up neatly upon the shelves
And the loose fragment cavendish
And the shag,
And the bright Virginia
Loose under the bright glass cases,
And a pair of scales
Not too greasy,
And the votailles dropping in for a word or two in passing,
For a flip word, and to tidy their hair a bit.

O God, O Venus, O Mercury, patron of thieves,
Lend me a little tobacco-shop,
or install me in any profession
Save this damn'd profession of writing,
where one needs one's brains all the time.

　　ああ神さま、ヴィーナスさま、泥棒を守るマーキュリーさま
お願いです、しかるべき時に、小さなタバコ屋一軒を下さいまし。
ピカピカ光る可愛い箱を
きちんと棚に積み上げ
キャベンディッシュの切れをふんわりと
それに刻みタバコと
きれいなヴァージニアを
きれいなガラスのケースに入れます
それに秤も
滑らないのがいいですが
できれば、淫売どもが立ち寄ってくれれば、ちょっと一言、二言
浮ついた話をして、髪を直しにきます。

　　ああ神さま、ヴィーナスさま、泥棒を守るマーキュリーさま
小さなタバコ屋一軒をお貸しくださるか
わたくしに職を身につけさせてください。
でもこのいやな物書きだけは勘弁を
しょっちゅう頭を使いますので。

Representative Poetry Online RPO の注釈によれば1913年に出たらしい。パウンド親分はチンピラ同然の自作に気合を入れている。「先が案じられる」と言っているが、案じられるのはパウンド本人である。彼は後にお尋ね者になり、牢屋に入った。写真は彼の顔写真である。

サンタ・マリア・ネヴェラはフィレンツエにあるドミニコ会の教会である。数々の芸術作品で名高い。「幼子イエズス像」は「聖母子像」のことであろうか。ただ真っ赤ではない。サンタ・マリア・ネヴェラ教会には高価な赤い絵の具を使った画像の数々で有名である。「赤」からこの教会が連想されたのだろうか？

約束 ―― エズラ・パウンド

エリオットを訳し始めて目に付き始めたのはエズラ・パウンドという名前である。この人についてはおいおい勉強していくつもりである。今日は目に付いた「約束( A Pact)」という詩を訳してみた。

A Pact

I make a pact with you, Walt Whitman -
I have detested you long enough.
I come to you as a grown child
Who has had a pig-headed father;
I am old enough now to make friends.
It was you that broke the new wood,
Now is a time for carving.
We have one sap and one root -
Let there be commerce between us.
