アルス・ポエティカ ―― アーチボルト・マクリーシュ

アメリカを後にしてヨーロッパに渡り、前衛芸術家のサークルに入った当時のマクリーシュのエリオットやパウンドの影響を受けた作品。題名もラテン語になっているのは当時の流行であろうか。禁欲的な前衛詩はロマン派の残滓を一切捨てるということらしいが。ピリオドまでそぎ落とした簡潔な詩。

Ars Poetica

A poem should be palpable and mute
As a globed fruit

Dumb
As old medallions to the thumb

Silent as the sleeve-worn stone
Of casement ledges where the moss has grown -

A poem should be wordless
As the flight of birds

A poem should be motionless in time
As the moon climbs

Leaving, as the moon releases
Twig by twig the night-entangled trees,

Leaving, as the moon behind the winter leaves,
Memory by memory the mind -

A poem should be motionless in time

A poem should be equal to:
Not true

For all the history of grief
An empty doorway and a maple leaf

触られても声なく

詩は古いメダリオン

詩は擦れた開き窓
苔むす石に触れても静か

詩は鳥の飛行
発する音声なく

詩は昇る月
終に動きなく

月は闇夜の樹の小枝を
一本、一本解き放つ

月は冬の葉ごし、記憶を

一瞬の永遠 ―― アーチボルト・マクリーシュ

ネットを見ていてアーチボルト・マクリーシュ Archibald MacLeish という名前に気付いた。アメリカで生まれの詩人でエリオットとエズラ・パウンドの崇拝者だったとある。現在著作権問題がなさそうな10詩ばかりがPoemHunter.com でアクセス可能である。今や古典的な「モダニズム」時代の作品であろうが、とにかく20世紀の作品である。

三歩格の四行詩が三つで構成される簡潔な詩。偶数行で韻を踏んでおり、古典的な形式である。一瞬に永遠性を感じるという、イマジストの詩に分類されるのであろうか。

An Eternity

There is no dusk to be,
There is no dawn that was,
Only there's now, and now,
And the wind in the grass.

Days I remember of
Now in my heart, are now;
Days that I dream will bloom
White the peach bough.

Dying shall never be
Now in the windy grass;
Now under shaken leaves
Death never was.
