The Archer is wake!
The Swan is flying!
Gold against blue
An Arrow is lying.
There is hunting in heaven―
Sleep safe till tomorrow.

The Bears are abroad!
The Eagle is screaming!
Gold against blue
Their eyes are gleaming!
Sleep!

The Sisters lie
With their arms intertwining;

北米の田園地帯で俳句を読んでいる。詩人の心の余裕が東洋的である。

Pastoral

The little sparrows
hop ingenuously
about the pavement
quarreling
with sharp voices
over those things
that interest them.
But we who are wiser
shut ourselves in
on either hand
and no one knows
whether we think good
or evil.

Meanwhile,

the old man who goes about
gathering dog-lime
walks in the gutter
without looking up
and his tread
is more majestic than
that of the Episcopal minister
approaching the pulpit
of a Sunday.

These things

astonish me beyond words.

いろんな形式に縛られた詩を読んできた人にはウィリアムスのイマジストの描写は新鮮だったのだろう。だがこのリズムには当惑してしまう。

多分冷蔵庫の上にメモを書き残したのだろう。

the plums
that were in
the icebox
and which
you were probably
saving
for breakfast

they were delicious

標準的な英詩なら五歩格の二行詩。改行キーで八行詩になっている。各行の規則性はある。三音節の後は二音節であり、これでリズムを与えているようだ。俳句の影響を受けたウィリアムスの新しいメトリックス。
