Edith Holden の絵日記ではウォーリックシャーの１００年前の天気は悪くはないが、どんよりしていた。西北の微風とのことである。彼女の絵日記に頼ったこのブログも２周目に入ったが、今回も女流詩人ジーン・インゲローの詩の一節である。


The cushat's cry for me
'The lovely laughter of the wind-swayed wheat

聖ヨハネ祭

日の長さが頂点に達し、太陽がこれからは小さくなっていく夏至の夜。ヨーロッパの異教徒は太陽を励ますべく、火をたいてまつった。キリスト教会はこの異教の祭りの日を聖書のルカ伝をもとに夏至の日を洗礼者聖ヨハネの誕生の日とした。私はかって大原美術館で丘の上で火を燃やす光景を描いた絵を見たのだが、画家の名前を忘れてしまった。写真は北欧のボンファイアの光景で、以下の内容とは一致しないが、丘だけではなく、街角でも火をたいて飲み騒ぐ祭りの光景は聞いたことがある。１７世紀初頭のロンドンの光景であるが、シェークスピアの「真夏の夜の夢」とはだいぶ趣が違う。


The goodly buildings that till then did hide
Their rich array, open'd their windows wide,

Whose bright pearl-glittering robes did mock the flame
Of the night's burning lights, did sit to see
How every senator in his degree,

それまで華麗な内部を隠していた
豪華な建物が窓を開いた。
王家の人、大貴族、高貴な婦人の方々、
その真珠のきらめく華麗な衣装は夜を焦がす
炎の光をあざむくばかり、
人々が眺めるは、元老たちの身分に応じて
光輝く黄金や紫の草で染めた衣装を着飾り、
見事な馬具をつけ、堂々と馬にまたがる様子。
お供の者は馬に乗り街を練り歩き、
足の飾りには、誇り高き金色の紋章で
飾られてはきらめき、その輝きは、
暗闇を空から追い出さんと
高く掲げられたたいまつの中でも、
本当に、太陽の光と見まがうばかり。
街にはうるさい連中があちこち
作法を守れと行ったりきたり、まだうろうろしている。
テーブルの上にはたくさん並べられ
ドアの前では隣同士がもてなしているというのに。

五月

１００年前の五月一日エディス・ホールデンの絵日記によれば、ウオーリックシャーの天気は、未だ寒く、小雨が降り、時々晴れ間が見えた天気だったようである。ちょうどこのブログも一年を越え、記事数も内容的に重複するのもあるが、全部で１５０になった。二ヶ月ばかり目を患ったので、実働約１１ヶ月である。

今後の方針は特になく、勝手気ままに遊んでいこうと思っていっるが、「牧神の午後の英訳」にも取り組んでみたいと考えている。

今月も月の初めは、ベリー公のカレンダーとエディスが書き込んだ詩のうち、まだ未紹介の詩がいくらでもある。以下はワーヅワスの長い詩のうちから、この季節にふさわしい部分を彼女が抜き書きしたものである。


While Earth herself is adorning,
This sweet May-morning,
And the Children are culling
On every side,
In a thousand valleys far and wide,
Fresh flowers; while the sun shines warm,
And the Babe leaps up on his Mother's arm:--

エディス・ホールデンの絵日記によれば、１００年前の Warwickshire の天気は、風はなく、曇りだったそうである。私の住む町の天気と同じである。

彼女の絵日記に書き込んだ詩の中から、まだ未紹介の１９世紀初頭の女流詩人 Mrs. Hemans の詩を選んだ。ウェブでは彼女の伝記はあるが、この詩は出てこなかった。タイトルがあるのか、最初の行をタイトルとするのか分からなかった。彼女は、家庭生活では幸福とはいえなかったが、最後は田舎に引きこもり、世俗との縁を絶つという意味でロマンチックな人生を送った女性で、イギリスではかなり知られた詩人だったとある。いかにもエディス好みである。

I come, I come! Ye have called me long,
I come o'er the mountains with light and song!
Ye may trace my step o'er the wakening earth,
By the winds that tell of the violets birth,
By the primrose stars in the shadowy grass,
By the green leaves opening as I pass.

I have passed also o'er the hills of the stormy North,

目覚め始めた大地、私の通ったあとをたどれるわ。
スミレの誕生を知らせるくれる風で、
黒々とした草原を飾るサクラソウで、
青々とした野に芽吹き始めた葉で。

吹雪く北の丘を超えてきたのよ。
カラマツは穂をだし、
漁師さんは陽のふりそそぐ海に船を出し、
トナカイは柵を出入りし、
松の木は緑色の飾りをつけ、
コケはどこでも輝いていたわ。
