I love September's yellow morns

今回も Edith Holden の The Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady の September に載っているものである。Alex. Smith の詩は九月の詩であることは間違いないが、Tennyson の詩には September の語はない。晴朗な季節感から、彼女が選んだのであろう。

Sweet August doth appear

ベリー公の暦では鷹狩りのシーズンになっている。五月の絵に似た構図だが、背景には川で水遊びしている男女がいる。われわれの八月はイギリスの Sweet August とはほど遠いが、これも五穀豊穣の兆しと考え、以下のように夏を賛美しよう。八月は乙女座の月である。やがてこのような快適な季節がくることを乙女とともに待とう。

なお今回の詩は The Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady の August にある。この本は、動植物のイラストレイターであった Edith Holden が、イギリスの四季折々を絵と日記で描写したものであり、後にファクシミリ印刷され、われわれも楽しめるようになった。

ちなみにこの絵日記は１９０６年のウォーリックシャーの観察記録であり、８月１日は：

Warm, bright day with southwest breezes.

ベリー公の暦では収穫の月であるが、目を悪くして思うように書き込みができないのが残念である。

この種の暦はヨーロッパのどこにでもあるが、イタリアのある寺院？の暦では、７月の農作業は「昼寝」だそうである。イタリアならずとも、たしかにこれは重要な作業である。この絵を確認したいのだが。

７月は獅子座の月。スペンサーは英雄ヘラクレスの獅子退治の困難に喩えて、七月の酷暑を描写している。

Then came hot JULY, boiling like to fire,
That all his garments he had cast away;
Upon a lion raging yet with ire
He boldly rode, and made him to obey:
It was the beast that whilom did foray
The Nemaean forest, till the Amphitrionide
Him slew, and with his hide did him array:
Behind his back a scythe, and by his side.
Under his belt he bore a sickle circling wide.

SPENSER

続いて、今にも炎にならんとする灼熱の七月が登場する。
七月は衣装をかなぐり捨て、
怒り狂う獅子に
勇敢にも跨り、獅子を御して進む。
この獅子こそ、遂にアンフィトリュオン親子に殺されるまで、
ネメアの森を荒らした獣である。
七月はこの毛皮を纏い、
肩に大鎌を背負い、
腰には円形の鎌を差して進む。

スペンサー

スペンサーの詩はベリー公の時祷書の獅子座にはあっているが、今少し牧歌的ではない。以下も夏の一こまである。

The cushat's cry for me.
"'The lovely laughter of the wind-swayed wheat
The easy slope of yonder pastoral hill;
The sedgy brook whereby the red kine meet
And wade and drink their fill.'

草刈りのシーズンである。

月の女王、五月の初日。若者は朝まだきに馬に乗り、野を駆けめぐり、陽が昇る前には、若い枝を折って戻ってくる。

女たちは磨り潰した孔雀石で染め上げた、おそろいの若緑の衣装をきてこの日を祝う。

楽隊は陽気にラッパを吹き鳴らす。

Spenser の詩を引用しよう。上の絵にもあるように、暦では五月に双子座が登場する。Spenser は双子の兄弟が五月を担いで回るお祭り騒ぎに喩えて詩を書いた。

Then came fair May, the fairest maid on ground,
Decked all with dainties of her season’s pride,
And throwing flowers out of her lap around:
Upon two brother’s shoulders she did ride,
The twins of Leda [Gemini]; which on either side
Supported her like to their sovereign Queen.
Lord ! how all creatures laughed, when her they spied,
And leapt and danced as if they had ravished been!
