今日紹介するのはイギリスの詩人ハウスマンの「ウェンロックの斜面」である。詩人はイギリスに今も残るローマ帝国支配時代の遺跡を訪れて、感慨にふけった詩である。ここまでは正しいとしよう。 さらに、この詩は４詩節からなり、１詩節４行である。全行８音節で弱強格を厳格に維持し、脚韻も完璧である。この形式から主語とか動詞を割り出す努力をした。 語学力がないといろんな解釈が成立するものであるが、先入観が出来上がった。吹き荒れる強風はイギリス原住民の抵抗精神である。 ウェッブをブラウズしてみたが、ネイティヴにはまったく問題がなく、いまだに人気があるようである。ウェンロックという固有名詞はハウスマンのこの詩で記憶されているそうである。でも私の解釈が正しいかどうかは、ウェンロックを詣でてこの詩を朗読する必要がある。ああ英吉利に行きたし、されど英吉利はあまりに遠し！ On Wenlock Edge On Wenlock Edge the wood's in trouble; His forest fleece the Wrekin heaves; The gale, it plies the saplings double, And thick on Severn snow the leaves.
