・・・・・・The ground is covered with pillboxes, and American graves are everywhere, some marked by long, regular lines of white crosses―row upon row making up a cemetery―some scattered individually among the pillboxes, outlined by coconut logs and marked by a white wood cross with the Marine's steel helmet resting on the ground in front of it. The Japanese graves―several thousand of them−are unmarked. The bodies were thrown into a pit scraped out by a bulldozer and then covered with coral pushed over them by the same bulldozer. Since the island was small, even the enemy bodies had to be buried!
　The officer I was with, who came in soon after the first landing, told me that our Marines seldom accepted surrender of the Japanese troops on the island. It had been a bitter fight; our men had lost heavily; the general desire was to kill and not take prisoners. Even when prisoners were taken, the naval officer said, they were lined up and asked which ones could speak English. Those who were able to speak English were taken for questioning. The others "simply weren't taken."

　Supper and evening with Colonel Freeman and staff officers. They told me some of the incidents surrounding the capture of this island. We started with a terrific sea and air bombardment. The Japanese, as usual, fought stubbornly. The Marines, as usual, seldom accepted surrender.

・・・・・・地面の至る所に弾薬箱が散乱し、アメリカ軍の墓地が出来ている。白い十字架の長い列が整然と並び―十字架の列に次ぐ列が墓地を形造るところもあれば、散乱した弾薬箱の間にぽつんと椰子の木の板材で固まれ、白い板の十字架が立つ墓地もあった。墓標前の土盛りには海兵隊の鉄兜が置いてある。日本軍将兵―数千人の墓地には墓標らしきものさえ立っておらぬ。死体はブルドーザーが渫《さら》って穴の中に放り込み、その同じブルドーザーが掻き集めた石灰岩で上から蔽ったのである。島が小さかったので、敵の死体さえ埋めねばならなかったということだ！　
　同行の士官は第一波が上陸に成功してから間もなく到着したのだが、海兵隊は日本軍の投降をめったに受け付けなかったそうである。激戦であった。わが方も将兵の損害が甚大であった。敵をことごとく殺し、捕虜にはしないというのが一般的な空気だった。
捕虜をとった場合でも、一列に並べ、英語を話せる者はいないかと質問する。英語を話せる者は尋問を受けるために連行され、あとの連中は「一人も捕虜にされなかった」という。
