¡üAbout Serizawa Keisuke
Serizawa Keisuke was born in 1895 in the Hon-tori area in Shizuoka City, Japan. After graduating from the Design Department of Tokyo Higher Technical School (presently Tokyo Institute of Technology), he met his lifelong mentor Yanagi Soetsu and came in contact with Bingata, the dye art of Okinawa. They were the catalyst for Serizawa's work with stencil dye art. Serizawa had a talent for color and design and was not bounded by traditional dye art; he made many unique and creative works one after another.

¡¡Serizawa was very prolific. Not limited to just dyeing, his wide range of work throughout his lifetime was clear and gentle and loved by many. Not only Japan but other countries also admired Serizawa, especially France where his work surprised and brought respect from French intellects. At the invitation of the French government, Serizawa held an exhibition of his works at The Grand Palais in Paris in 1976 and it established his fame. In that year also, he was designated as a "Person of Cultural Merit". Serizawa Keisuke died at the age of 88 on April 5, 1984.

Serizawa Keisuke (1895-1984) was acknowledged as a "Living National Treasure" in 1956 for his stencil dyeing technique called "Kataezome." "Kataezome" is a technique of using stencils (katagami) to dye the original artistic patterns on cloth material or Japanese paper.

The word "Kataezome" was created to express Serizawa Keisuke's style by the Agency for Cultural Affairs when the late artist received the title of "Living National Treasure." His creations cover a large range of works: Kimono, Obi (sash), Noren (door way curtains), Kabekake (wall drapes), and Byobu (folding screens). All were designed using the Kataezome technique; improving various Japanese traditional stencil dyeing crafts, in particular Bingata in the Okinawa District. He is the first man to try dyeing not only cloth but also Japanese paper. His success widened the scope of dyeing to beyond that of just cloth.

In his bold descriptive style and construction of patterns, Serizawa uses motifs such as plants, animals, domestic wares, humans, landscapes, characters, as well as bright and lively color tones. Along with these traits, there is a warm feeling that runs throughout all of his works. His prominent works are not limited to dyeing and can also be found in other creations: books, thick curtains, stained glass, furniture, glass paintings, and calligraphy.
