MELE companion and watchdog for our daughter Leilani. and brought home a beautiful golden retriever pup. Although this pup was only two months old, she quickly got attached to Leilani. She was a very cute puppy and as Leilani’s babysitter, we wanted the pup to sing beautifully to our daughter , so we named her MELE. MELE in the Hawaiian language means song. The pronunciation of the name Mele was easily mastered by Leilani, and she soon was calling out to Mele whenever she went out the kitchen door. And she appeared to be pregnant, and while observing her everyday, her abdomen and breasts got larger. Towards the end of this pregnancy, Mele was so big and tired that she just lulled around. However, inspite her condition, whenever Leilani who was one year and ten months old, was out in the yard running around , Mele was right behind her. She followed Leilani like a mother following her child. Mele did not come out to greet us, as she always does. We thought it strange, and called her but no matter how loud our voices, Mele did not come. We couldn't find her. Suddenly it occurred to us that she could have had her puppies. I then began looking all around the yard for her, in any place that would be ideal for Mele and her puppies , until I heard mewing sounds . It sounded like new born kittens or could it be Mele's puppies. I went toward the sound and soon discovered Mele , under a vine covered branch of a tree, that looked like the roof of a "Lean to" . There were Mele and her puppies . When I counted them , one by one, I was surprised, there were ten of them. I patted Mele’s head saying " Well done, well done." I left Mele and her puppies, returned to the house to share the " Good news" with my wife. Then she picked the puppy with her mouth, and went off. Mele returned after several minutes with another puppy , and did the same thing again . It appeared that Mele was bringing her puppies to show them to us . I kept thinking out loud to myself, however , the next day two of the puppies died . As I prepared to bury them, at the foot of our yard, I told the puppies, " The next time you are born, be sure to be born a healthy pup." She continued to nurse her puppies, but without eating or drinking fluids, she began to waste away. We tried to get Mele to eat, and put milk in her food, made beef soup, but it did not help. Mele just smelled the food and walked away. a few more days passed. A week after she had her puppies, Mele disappeared. < to be continued >
