杉原は、昭和15年、第二次世界大戦中にリトアニアのカウナスの日本領事館に勤務していました。夏のある日、領事館の周囲をユダヤ人が取り囲みます。しかも日に日に人が増えてきます。代表５名を領事館に入れ、事情を聞くと、迫害されたユダヤ人が、逃れるために通過ビザを出して欲しいとの要求でした。
Mr. Chiune SUGIHARA was from Gifu. SUGIHARA was working in the
consulate of Japan in Kaunas, Lithuania in 1940 during WWII. One day in summer, the consulate was surrounded by Jews. Number of people increased day by day. SUGIHARA invited 5 representatives into the consulate and listened to them. They said that they were the persecuted Jews and they requested the consulate to issue transit visas to escape from Nazi persecution. 日本政府の回答はノーでしたが、放っておけない杉原は、ビザを発給します。この年の 7月29日から9月5日にカウナスを離れるまで、来る日も来る日も書き続けます。万年筆は折れ、ペンにインクを付けて書きました。夜もほとんど寝なかったそうです。駅にまでユダヤ人が押し寄せます。杉原は涙ながら、最後の最後まで、列車の窓からもビザを書き続けました。
The official answer from the Japanese government was NO, but
SUGIHARA could not leave them alone and decided to issue the visas. He continued to write the visas for the Jews day after day from 29 July till 5 September when he had to leave Kaunas. His fountain pen was broken, but he went on writing with his pen dipped to the ink bottle. He hardly slept during the period. Jews rushed to the Kaunas station where SUGIHARA was leaving. SUGIHARA kept writing visas and issued them across the train window to the Jews until the last minute. 時は流れ、昭和43年、イスラエル大使館から杉原家に電話がかかってきます。杉原が大使館を訪れると一人のユダヤ人がボロボロになったビザを持って立っていました。最初に会った代表５名のうちの一人だったのです。実に28年ぶりの再会でした。約6000人の命を救った杉原。出身地の岐阜県八百津町には記念館もあります。

When he visited the embassy, a guy was standing there with a crumpled visa in his hand. He was one of the 5 representatives SUGIHARA first met. It was the reunion after 28 year interval. SUGIHARA saved about 6,000 lives. There is a memorial hall for him
