Kay:Good morning, Seiji. How about this lovely spring weather?
Sure makes for a pleasant change, doesn't it? Seiji: Yes, it certainly does. However, the weather forecast predicts a cold snap with lower-than- average temperatures for this time of year. There's also a strong
possibility of high winds in some coastal areas due to a low-pressure
trough in the mid-Atlantic.
Kay: Wow, thanks for the meteorological update on what's coming to our neck of the woods. I didn't realize you followed the weather
so closely.
Seiji: Well, not until recently. One of my American friends has been telling me how important small talk is in everyday life in the U.S.
And he says the weather is a standard topic. So I've been paying close attention to the forecasts so I can engage in casual
conversation.
Allyce: That's very commendable. But to level with you, Seiji, people will find it a bit strange if you come off like the weatherman.
Seiji : Sorry. I guess I overdid it. I've always felt very uncomfortable engaging in small talk.
Americans, on the other hand, have impressed me with their superb
conversational skills.
