私たちの自身の生命を救う選択が
私たちに与えられているのです。

他人を救うことが、結局、自分自身の生命をも救うのだ、という仏教思想の根本を為す自他一体のメッセージがこの曲を不朽の名曲にしている最大の理由でしょう。
マイケル・ジャクソンが仏教を？という質問が飛んできそうですが、かつて、インド哲学者でもあるディーパク・チョプラ博士に、瞑想指導を頼んできたということをラリーキングライブの追悼番組で語っていたので、マイケルジャクソンも、かなり仏教思想を学んでいたのではないか。

「しかし、やがて人類が目覚めてくる。自分のほかに他人も存在していることがわかってくる。その他人も自分と同じく「生命であり」欲望であることに気がついてくる。・・・・・・・しかし人間の意識が発達してくるにつれて、他人の苦しんでいるのを見ることが喜びで無くなってくる。他人の苦しみを見ることが自分の苦しみであることを体験する。彼は自分と他人とが「共通の生命」によって繫がっていて、その本質が一つのものであることを感じる。他人の喜びが同時に自分の喜びであり、他人の苦しみが自分の苦しみであり、自分を喜ばすためには、同時に他人を喜ばさなければ本当の深い歓喜は味わえないものだということに気がついてくる。これはその人が共通生命において互いに自他が一体であることを自覚してきた証拠であって、肉という外形によって、個々別々に、他人が自分との間に障壁を築いていたことがまちがいであったことが悟られてきた証拠である。」
