KING: We're back with Madonna -- the lovely and very talented Madonna. We have got a lot to talk about: her film career and extraordinary -- you have had an unusual life.

I mean, we were talking about fame earlier and there are bad things about it, but I wouldn't trade my life for anyone's. マドンナ：勿論です。先ほど、有名人でいることのマイナスの話が出ましたけれども、私は自分の人生を誰の人生と も交換したくありません。 KING: The marriage to Sean Penn -- it got so much attention and knowing him, he didn't like that. キング：ショーン・ペンとの結婚はもの凄く注目を浴びましたが、彼はそれがイヤだったんでしょう。 MADONNA: No. マドンナ：そうですね。 KING: Did you like it? You were in the tabloids every other day. キング：あなたは毎日のようにタブロイド紙に出ていましたよね。 MADONNA: No, I didn't like the attention that, you know, the focus on the state of the our marriage. I like attention when it's about the work, but not about relationships. マドンナ：仕事が注目されるのは好きですけど、結婚そのものに注目がいくことは、私もイヤでした。 KING: And he didn't like it either? キング：彼もイヤだったんですよね。 MADONNA: No, he hated it -- no. マドンナ：とても嫌がっていました。 KING: Are you friends? キング：お二人は今も友達ですか？ MADONNA: Yes, we are. マドンナ：はい。 KING: Was -- are you happy for how his career has gone? キング：彼の人生はあれで良かったと思っていますか？ MADONNA: Oh, yes I think he's an incredible actor and I think he's done very well. I'm -- I'm, you know, I'm honored to know him. マドンナ：はい。彼は立派な俳優ですし、立派なキャリアを築きました。彼と知り合えたことをとても誇りに思っていま す。 KING: So that part of your life while it may have not ended the way you like, was it a plus, when you look back and say, I am glad I had that experience. The thing is he's an -- I learned a lot. He's an incredible human being. He's intelligent; he's talented. Even though things didn't work out for us in terms of our marriage, I don't regret marrying him for a moment. マドンナ：グッチのレザーは大きい音がでちゃうんですよ。彼からは多くのことを学びました。人間として俳優として素 晴らしいものを持った人です。残念なことに私たちの結婚はうまくいきませんでしたが、あの結婚を後悔したことはあ りません。 KING: How about being a mother? キング：母親になったことについては？ MADONNA: I certainly don't regret that. マドンナ：もちろん後悔していません。 KING: I mean is it all you thought it would be? キング：頭にあるのはまずそのことですか？ MADONNA: It's more than what I thought it would be. マドンナ：想像していた以上に素晴らしいものでした。 KING: The press -- and hate to -- they all refer to it as you were out looking for someone. You deliberately wanted to pick a father. It was almost like -- was any of that true? キング：マスコミはともかく誰か子供の父親になってくれる人を捜していたと報じていましたが、本当にそうだったんで すか？ MADONNA: Absolutely not. I had a relationship for two years with Carlos before -- before I got pregnant and I was madly in love with him, and it's a ludicrous accusation. I don't know where it came from. But it's -- you know, it's not fair. That's his dad -- that's her daddy. キング：子供には会っているんですか。 MADONNA: Oh, yes. マドンナ：はい。 KING: What do you like best about motherhood? You had it late, right? You were 37. キング：母親であることのどこが一番好きなんですか？ ３７歳になっての子供でしょう。 MADONNA: Thirty-eight, actually, when I gave birth, yes. What do I like best about it? Just -- I mean, every day I am in complete wonderment of her and I love being woken up in the morning. I love her coming in the room and kissing me and waking me up. I love looking into her eyes. I love watching her grow. I love watching her absorb life around her. マドンナ：出産時は３８歳でした。子育ての一番素晴らしいところ。そうですね、毎日が驚きの連続です。毎朝、娘が 私をキスで起こしてくれるのはとても素敵なことですし、彼女の目を見ていると幸せな気分になるし、彼女が色んなこ とを吸収しながら成長してゆく過程をみるのも幸せです。 KING: As you see her, she's rather pretty. キング：かわいいですねえ。 MADONNA: Oh, yes, she's gorgeous, if I do say so. マドンナ：とてもかわいいでしょう。 KING: But you also have a life of flying here, flying there, being on stage. キング：でもあなたは公演であちこちを飛び回っているんでしょう。 MADONNA: Yes. So far she goes everywhere I go. マドンナ：今のところは、行く先々に連れていっています。 KING: What are you going do when she goes to school? キング：学校へ行くようになったらどうするんですか。 MADONNA: Well, I am going to stay in one place and I am going to work from -- when she's in school. Starting at the age of four I am not going to travel while she's in school. Say I have to go somewhere for the weekend or something like that, I would leave her, but I don't want to take her out of school and I don't want to be away from her for any extended period of time. マドンナ：一カ所に落ち着きます。４歳から学校に通うようになりますから、それ以降は今のように各地を飛び回るよ うな生活はしません。一週間くらい娘を自宅に残してどこかへ行くようなことはあるでしょうけど、長期間に渡って、離 ればなれになったり、学校を休ませたりすることはしません。 KING: Is she going through terrible two's? キング：いまどうしようもない２歳なんですか。 MADONNA: Yes, lots of tantrums. She's got -- yes. She has two -- she has two things that she sort of, like, if she can't have, she throws herself on the floor and starts... マドンナ：そうです。彼女がどうしても欲しいと駄々をこねて床にひっくり返って騒ぐものがふたつあるんですよ。 KING: And so we give it to her or don't... キング：それで言うことを聞くんですか。 MADONNA: No, no we don't give it to her. マドンナ：いいえ。 KING: Oh, that's Midwest we don't give it to her. Why would you... キング：なぜ聞いてやらないんですか。 MADONNA: You can't, that's not good. マドンナ：それはよくないですよ。 KING: I know, my wife tells me that's not good. But how do you not? How do you not? How do you not -- a child is pleading for something. キング：それは私の妻も言っていますが、子供がこうしてと言っているときにどうやってダメと言うんですか。 MADONNA: Because you have to -- I mean you have to have discipline. You have to teach them discipline. You have to show them who's in charge. If you give in to them every time they're going to run your life. Come on, Larry. マドンナ：だって子供には躾が肝腎です。いつも子供の言うことを聞いていたらあなたの人生を子供に振り回されて しまいますよ。ラリー、しっかりしなきゃ。 KING: Isn't it hard not to, though, truth? Especially when you get a little older -- I don't mean that 38 is old. キング：でも厳しくするのはつらいでしょ？ 特に４０歳の母親にとっては・・・・・・。 MADONNA: I'll give in when she says she wants a piece of sugarless gum. Then I'll say yes, but she can't watch TV. マドンナ：ガムちょうだいと言われたときには私だってあげます。でもテレビは絶対に見せません。 KING: She can't watch TV? キング：テレビを見せないんですか。 MADONNA: No, she won't be watching this interview. マドンナ：見せません。このインタビューも見ていません。 KING: Why can't she watch? キング：どうしてダメなんですか。 MADONNA: Because I don't want her to get addicted to it. Kids get addicted to it. They become mesmerized. マドンナ：子供は何にでもクセになりますし、テレビ中毒にしたくないんです。 KING: Barney? キング：セサミストリートもダメですか。 MADONNA: No, no there's no Barney in her life. マドンナ：ダメです。 KING: No Barney. キング：バーニーも知らないんですか。 MADONNA: No. マドンナ：知りませんよ。 KING: That's like mean. キング：意地悪とは思いませんか。 MADONNA: No, it's not. I didn't watch TV when I grew up. She likes to read. She uses her imagination. She's very verbal. She has an incredible memory. All of those things I don't think she would have if she watched TV all the time. マドンナ：そんなことはありません。私だって子供の頃テレビは見ていません。娘は本が好きで想像力も豊かでよくし ゃべりますし、記憶力をいいんですよ。テレビを見ていたらこうはなりません。 KING: Do you ever feel when you see Barney or hear about him that you're depriving her? I'm only kidding. キング：それでは自分は子供から何かを取り上げているんだとは思いませんか。 MADONNA: No, I don't get it -- that big purple thing -- I don't get it. マドンナ：バーニーのどこが面白いんですか。 KING: Neither do I. It's a big purple thing. キング：私にも分かりません。バーニーは紫ですね。 MADONNA: Is it a purple thing -- right I can't remember -- or is it a yellow thing? マドンナ：バーニーは紫でしたっけ、それとも黄色でしたっけ、よく覚えていないんです。 KING: Purple. キング：紫です、バーニーは。 MADONNA: No, that's Big Bird -- OK. マドンナ：黄色はビッグバードでしたね。思い出しました。 (LAUGHTER) KING: We'll be back with more of Madonna.
