生長の家とは何だったのか？

新年明けましておめでとうございます

今年もよろしくお願いします。

 

今年も、このブログは英語に執着していきます。

 

ニューズウィークは１９８２年１１月１５日号で、「地球語」としての英語についての特集記事を書いていますが、その冒頭で、次のように述べています。

 

 Today, like it or curse it, English is the closest thing to a ligua franca around

the globe.
Roughly 700 million people speak it---an increase of 40 percent in the last 20

 years and a total that represents more than one-seventh of the worlds

population.
It has replaced French in the world of diplomacy and German in the field of

science.
It is the dominant language of medicine, electronics and space technology, of

internatinal business and advertising, of radio, television and film.
Says Robert Burchfield, editor of the Oxford English Dictionary:

Any literate, educated person on the face of the globe is deprived if he does

not know English.

 

この記事から今はかなり時間がたっており、英語の重要性はますます高まってきていることは間違いないですね。

 

生長の家は人類光明化運動を掲げているのですが、生長の家の根本に横たわる考え方として、全人類を対象にしているということなのですね。

国内だけで完結する運動ではない、ということなんですね。

 

そういう意味では、現総裁の雅宣氏の国際化路線は間違っていないとは思っています。

ただ、いろいろな掲示板で批判されているようにいろいろ問題はあります。

生長の家のこれからの課題ですね。

 

 

「今」を全力を出して戦いとれ

Do Your Best to Fully Utilize The Present Moment

 

「生長の家」の兄弟よ。
今があなたの時なのだ。
今、
実に今だ。
今のほかに時はない。
兄弟よ。
今あなたに与えられているすべてのことを今段々固として敢行せよ。
今あなたに可能であると見えることをなんのためらいもなく今実行せよ。
これが「生長の家」の生き方だ。
そして生命の生長の法則にかなう道だ。

 

Brothers and sisters of Seicho-No-Ie, your time is now.
Now
Indeed Now
There is no other time than now.
Brothers and sisters, do now, with firm determination, all that you have been

 given now.
Carry out now without hesitation what you think is possible for you to do now.
That is the Seicho-No-Ie way of Life.
That is the way that is in accordance with the laws governing the growth of life.

朝の時間を生かせ（３）

もし諸君が金銭を棄てたく思うならば、これを捨てよ。

Throw away your money if you wish.

しかし決して朝の時間を捨てるな。

But never throw away your morning hours.

もし諸君が己が所有する土地、建物、衣裳などを捨てたく思うならばどんな時でもこれを捨てよ。

Throw away land, buildings, clothes, if you wish, at any time,

しかし、けっして朝の時間を捨てるな。

but never throw away your morning hours.

金、土地、建物、衣裳などは、また自分に還ってくることがあるであろう。

Money, land, buildings, and clothes may return to you again.

しかし、いかなる力をもってするも失われたる朝の時間を回復する道はないのである。

But there is no way for you to regain the morning hours that you have lost.

【コメント】
この箇所も、時間の大切さを再認識させてくれる非常に力強いメッセージです。
一日のなかで、もっとも自分にとって大切な時間、それは、自己の霊的な成長のために使う時間なのである、ということなのだと思います。結局のところ、人生の意義というのは、いかにして、自己の霊的な成長を実現していくのか、というところに存在するということですね。

諸君よ、諸君自身が生長の人となり、諸君の家を「生長の家」としようと思うならば、朝の時間をたくみに生かせ。

If you wish to become people who display infinite life, wisdom, and abundance
in your lives, if you wish for your homes to become "homes of infinite life,
and abundance" (Seichi-No-Ie), make skillful use of your morning hours.

およそ時間をたくにみ生かす者は、自己の生命を生かす者である。

With almost no exception, a person who makes effective use of his time makes
the most of his life.

なぜならわれわれの生命は時間的継続そのものであるからである。

That is because life is a continuumu of time itself.

わたしのように朝の時間をたくみに利用することによって二重に生きることができる者は、仮に五十年の生涯でも百歳を生きたとどうようとなるであろう。

He who succeeds in leading two lives, as I am doing, by using his morning
hours profitably, lives in effect for one hundred years, even if he should
live for only fifty.

かりに七十歳を生きれば百四十歳を生きたとどうようの価値を生きることができるであろう。

If he lives for seventy years, his life's value is the same as if he had lived
for one hundred and forty years.

【コメント】
やはり、時間の大切さを痛感させられる文章です。
特に、「life is a continuumu of time itself」というところですね。
たしかに、その通りで、人生というのは、時間によって、成り立っている。
「continuumu」という英語は、「連続体」という意味で、この箇所では、むずかしい英語といえば、これぐらいですね。
仏教の本などにもよく出てくる単語です。

朝の時間を利用するものは一日を生かすのである。毎日朝の時間を利用するものは生涯を生かすのである。

A person who utilizes the morning hours makes the most of his day.
He who utilizes the mornig hours of each day makes the most of his life.

【語句】make the most・・・・　・・・を最大限に利用する

朝の時間の不思議な特色はしばらく物質世界との関係が絶えているということである。心が非常に自由な、自然な、有形の世界にとらわれない伸び伸びとした状態にあるということである。この時間はわれわれの心のカメラがいっそう無形の世界の方へ向いていて、われわれ自身以上の英知者からの指導を受けやすいということである。

A strange feature of the morning hours is that for a while our
relationship to the material world is severed.
The mind is in a relaxed condition that is free, natural, and not
enslaved by the world of visible forms.
At this time the camera of the mind is turned more toward the world
without form, and, as a result, we can more readily receive guidance
from the Grand Source of Wisdom that is greater than ourselves.

【語句】severe 関係などを断つ　enslave：・・・を奴隷にする、・・・を・・・のとりこにする

愛する誌友諸君よ、諸君自身が「生長の人」であることを欲し、諸君の家庭が「生長の家」であることを欲するならば、この朝の時間を大切にせよ。多くの世界的な偉大な仕事がこの朝々に芽生えたものであることを知るものは幸いである。

Beloved friends, you who are subscribers to Seicho-No-Ie !
If you wish to be people who display infinite life, wisdom, and abundance
in your lives, if you wish for your home to become a home of infinite
life, wisdom, and abundance, carefully use your morning hours.
Blessed are they who realize that many major accomplishments of
world-wide significance started in the mornings.

この第七巻は生長の家の信徒にとっては、最も親しんでいる本といえるのではないでしょうか。
この第七巻は、生長の家の生き方、人生をどのような姿勢で生きていくのかの考え方が、最もよく教示されていますね。
私もこの第七巻は高校生の時に読んで以来、いま現在に至るも、この本の内容は私の人生のモットーとなっています。
この朝の時間を生かせという箇所も、非常に印象に残っているものです。
この第七巻の中でも、特に、私の好きな、心に訴えかける箇所を、日英両語で読むことによって、さらに深く、この教えを人生に生かしたいきたいと考えています。
元同時通訳者で立教大学で英語教育に関して教えておられる鳥飼久美子先生は、「異文化をこえる英語」（丸善ライブラリー）のなかで、
「何か意味のある内容を英語で読んだり書いたり話したりして、それで結果的に英語力をつける、っていうのが最近の英語教育の流れなんですよ」
とおっしゃっておられる。
であれば、生長の家の本の内容に大いに感銘を受けた人は、その内容を英語で読むということは英語の上達を図りたいと考えている人にとっては非常に意味のあることだということになりますね。
