TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Japan and Myanmar will begin consultations next week on new development assistance for the Southeast Asian country, given signs of progress in its democratization process, Foreign Minister Koichiro Gemba said Tuesday.
Japan has suggested it is ready to resume official development aid programs for Myanmar if the isolated country's transition to democratic governance progresses further.
Gemba told reporters that the launch of the consultations is aimed at making the current democratization process "irreversible."
Japan has frozen new ODA programs for Myanmar, formerly known as Burma, other than humanitarian aid since 2003, when pro-democracy icon Aung San Suu Kyi was placed under house arrest.
For the Japanese side, the consultations to begin Monday will be headed by the Kimihiro Ishikane, deputy head of the Foreign Ministry's Asian and Oceanian Affairs Bureau.
