【米国】民主党大統領選候補がICCの支持を言明

米民主党のエドワーズ候補、国際刑事裁判所への支持を言明

米国のNGO連合（AMICC）の同志から朗報が入りました。昨年12月28日付けでAP通信が伝えたところによると、2008年大統領選の民主党候補の1人であるジョン・エドワーズ（John Edwards）元上院議員が、記者会見で国際刑事裁判所（ICC)への支持を言明していたというのです。ちょっと今は要約している時間もないのですが、とりあえず原文をアップしておきます。

民主党からは、2004年の大統領選のときにも、党内統一候補選出のための予備選では元陸軍大将のウェズリー・クラーク（Gen. Wesley Clark）候補が、本選ではブッシュ大統領と闘ったジョン・ケリー（John Kerry）候補が、それぞれICCに対する支持を表明していました。いまは民主優勢な情勢ですから、その中で予備選も勝ち進むと見られる有力候補がICCの支持を表明したことは大きいです。それでは、要約はのちほど・・。

of the International Criminal Court? The answer's yes.

America -- when America doesn't engage in these international
institutions, when we show disrespect for international agreements, it
makes it extraordinarily difficult when we need the world community to
rally around us to get them there.

We should be the natural leader in all of these areas, and, certainly,
we should be a member of the International Criminal Court.

You know, we didn't used to be the country of Guantanamo and Abu Ghraib.
We were the great light for the rest of the world, and America needs to
be that light again. And we can -- and we can be that light again.
