Consolation letter from Britain

この度の、東北関東大震災で、亡くなられた多くの方々のご冥福をお祈り申し上げます、と、ともに、被災された方々へ心からのお見舞いを申し上げます。

 

地震も津波も怖いですが・・・原子力発電も、本当に多くの危険を伴っているのですね。

 

 

 

また、たくさんの国から、救援隊が来てくださっています。

 

My friend in Britain sent me a consolation letter.

I asked her if I could put her letter on my blog.

She accepted to my proposal.

So I put excerpt of her letter.

 

 

イギリスの友人が、なくなった方々や被災された方々へお悔やみとお見舞いのお手紙をくださいましたので、ブログにその抜粋をのせて、地球の反対側に住んでいる方も心配してくださっていることをお知らせしたいと思います。

 

 

Dear Urara,

 

I have been so worried for all the people of Japan .  It is so devastating to see on the News what has befallen your country.  So many, many lives lost.  It too horrible for words.

 

 私はずーっと日本の人々のことを、とても心配しています。貴方の国に降りかかった不幸をテレビで見るのは、ほんとうに心苦しいです。たくさんの方々が亡くなりましたね。あまりにも恐ろしくて言葉に表わせません。

 

If more reactors explode then I am sure electricity to all in Japan will be affected. 

  

もし、原子炉がまた、爆発したら日本のすべての皆さんの極度の緊張は、きっと、更にたかまっていくでしょうね。

 

 

My deepest sorrow to all who are suffering in Japan .  I can only wish them strength to see beyond the horror that has befallen them.  

日本で、被害を受けている方々に本当にお気の毒に思います。私に出来ることは、皆様に降りかかった悲惨な出来事を乗り越える強さを持っていただきたいと願うだけです。

After 3 weeks in the hospital Linda's grandchildren come back to their home.
They are doing well now.
She weighs 13 pounds and her brother weighs 12.

３週間ほどの、入院の後リンダのお孫さんたちがお家に帰ってきました。
元気にしていますよ。
イングリッドは１３ポンド、　チャーリーは１２ポンドになりました。

Too busy to write

I've been so busy. Have to clear out my mother's house. She passed away last spring.
So I couldn't spare the time for my blog.

昨春なくなった母の家を片付けなければならなかったので、眼の回るような忙しさでした。
ブログを書く時間もありませんでした。

You know, first of all Joan made her own blog in August on blogspot but didn't write.
Now she's writing some poems.
They are quite nice.
Although I don't know much about poems.
I'm a prosy woman. (ha ha)

えーっと、まず最初にジョーンが自分のブログを８月に作ったのですが、何を書こうかと迷っていました。
今、詩を書きはじめました。
とっても、素敵に思いますが、実のところうららは、散文的な、人間でして…詩は良くわからないのですが…

Usually Westerner don't write reply to the comments, I guess.

She is writing about adorable twins.
They've been in NICU for over 3 months.

リンダの義理の娘さんのブログもお気に入りにいれてあります。
あの可愛らしくけなげな、長いこと新生児ＩＣＵに入っていた双子ちゃんのお母さんです。

Now they are doing very well and do not have to see a doctor for 2 months.
Linda said "The little girl is as big as her brother and both are very cute."
I'm very happy to hear that.

今ではすっかり元気に大きくなってお家に帰ってきています。
もう２ヶ月もお医者さんのお世話になっていません。
「小さかったイングリッドも、チャーリーと同じくらいに大きくなり、二人ともとっても可愛い。」
と、りんダは、書いてきています。

あ〜良かった。

This is my favourite idiom which, be assured, is not considered rude or intended to flay the faint hearted.

これは、私の好きな慣用句です。大丈夫よ！これは、無作法と思われたりしないし、臆病な人をドキドキさせるつもりも無いので。

All fur coat and no knickers!

毛皮のコートだけ…パ☆ティ　なし。

The meaning behind this saying is quite simple.

この、言い習わしの意味はとってもシンプル。

A derogatory remark, usually made of a woman of superficial appearance and with no real substance beneath.

軽蔑するような態度。たいていは、見せかけだけで中身の伴わない女の人がみせる場合が多いのですが。

I can remember as a child such a woman living in our neighbourhood. Everyone was on food rationing and the Nation as a whole, were going hungry. However, to appear "one cut above the rest" (better than anyone) she would appear on her doorstep every Sunday and sharpen her carving knife on the flagstone. Such action was only to imply to others that she had meat in the house that required carving. In truth, she was play acting and fared no better than the rest of us.

私がまだ子供だったころにそんな女の人が近所に住んでいました。食料品が配給制で、国中が飢えていました。でも、皆よりちょっと「上」よ、なーんてふりしてる人がいました。彼女は毎日曜日にドアの階段のところの敷石で肉用のナイフを研いでいたの。彼女は家の中にお肉を持っているのよ。と、皆に思わせるためだったのかしらね。実際、彼女はフリだけで、暮らし向きはちょっとも「上」ではなかったんですから。
