Hello Mr.---, As I promised, here are some thoughts from a young person in responseto your dilemma about why we are losing so many of our young people andwhy the truths taught within the assembly don't seem to "stick"or aren’t internalized. I am going to approach this question from a number ofdifferent angles, so please be patient with me. Also, at times I willaddress one of the two issues, as they are somewhat different, and then atother times I will address both, as they are also connected. I want to clarifyright at the start that the reason I feel comfortable sharing thesethoughts with you is that I see you as an exception to the rule of how Idescribe assembly brethren below. (My husband) and I respect andadmire you and appreciate your ministry greatly.
1. RELATIONSHIP
You had mentioned last night, and rightly so, that this generation isnot one that just "does as they are told" like the generationsof yester-year. I will begin at this point and briefly describe to you,not Generation X, but the next generation of young people, Generation Y.Technically, (My husband) and I fall into Generation Y, but because we areright at the cut off age, we actually demonstrate more Generation Xcharacteristics. Many of our friends and colleagues, however, are Generation Y.Gen Y kids are not bound by rules, codes, or creeds, but they areextremely bound by relationships. Rules are of little consequence to them, but relationships are paramount. Gen Y kids would sooner be loyal to aperson than to a place or a set of rules. This is why Gen Y kids wouldrather work for less money in a place that fosters their social network orfor a boss they personally like, than work for more wages in a job theyhate and with people they dislike. The kind of work they do is alsounimportant, but of great importance is that work is fun and enjoyable. And if it isn’t or they don’t like the boss, they're gone! (So and so)currently employs a young man who is about 23 yrs of age, and he has saidto (so and so) countless times, "I love this job because you arethe best boss I have ever had." You can tell where his loyalties lie! |
