So what then causes this discouragement among young people? We hear it week in week out, obey, obey, obey. If you're not obeying, you're in the wrong, etc. I don't argue that obedience to Christ is essential, but this pounding approach of “obey or die” drives people away, and doesn’t take into consideration the motive for obeying, which is love for Christ. Being constantly bombarded from the platform about the pattern, the pattern, the pattern, obedience, submit, submit, leaves little to refresh the soul. If you look around you, there really aren't many, if any at all, who are rebelling against the pattern. We get it already! But there are so many of us who have burdens in our lives, and hands that hang down, who feel we are just getting beaten into the ground by repetitious preaching that focuses so much on the rules, but not the reason behind them.
