サントリーのジョージ・スミス

　タクシー運転手を殴り料金を踏み倒したとして、警視庁府中署が昨年１２月３１日に強盗致傷の疑いで、ラグビー元オーストラリア代表でトップリーグ（ＴＬ）のサントリーに所属するジョージ・スミス容疑者（３７）を現行犯逮捕していたことが１７日、同署への取材で分かった。

　逮捕容疑は昨年１２月３１日午前０時１０分ごろ、自宅に近い東京都府中市の路上で、タクシー料金約１万円を払わず逃走。追い掛けてきた男性運転手（５８）の顔や胸などを殴り、けがをさせた疑い。府中署によると、当時、都内で飲酒した後だったといい、調べに「酔っぱらっていて覚えていない」と容疑を否認している。

　スミス容疑者は元オーストラリア代表フランカーで、テストマッチ１１１試合に出場。サントリーでは１１～１２年シーズンから２季連続で最優秀選手に輝いた。今季は負傷でシーズン途中に離脱。サントリーが２連覇を達成した１３日の日本選手権を兼ねたＴＬ決勝は出場しなかった。

　日本ラグビー協会の坂本典幸専務理事は１７日、都内での理事会後、「詳細が分かった段階で判断したい。お騒がせしておわびしたい」と述べた。逮捕翌日の１月１日に報告を受け、サントリーは６日にＴＬ準決勝を控えていたが、容疑を否認していることから「事実関係がはっきりしていないため、議論はしたが出場辞退という結論にはならなかった」と説明し、同様の理由で公表しなかったとした。当時スミス容疑者は選手登録から外れていた。
