濫用されすぎている一つの言葉

　　　それを僕はむやみに使うことができない

あまりに不当に軽蔑されすぎている一つの感情

　　　それをきみは軽蔑することができない

あまりに絶望に似ている一つの希望

　　　それを思慮分別は抑えこむことができない

そして、きみからの（憐れみ）は愛しい

　　　他の誰からのものよりもいっそう。

 

 

僕は、人が愛と呼ぶものをあげられない―

　　　でも、きみは受け取ってはくれないだろうか

心が空へ捧げる尊敬を

　　　そして（天）も拒まない尊敬を

星を求める蛾の願い

　　　朝を求める夜の願い

僕たちの悲しみの星から

　　　遠く遥かなものに捧げる祈りを。

 

One word is too often profaned

   For me to profane it,

One feeling too falsely disdained

   For thee to disdain it；

One hope is too like despair

   For prudence to smother,

And Pity from thee more dear

   Than that from another.

 

I can give not what men call love,ー

　　　But　wilt thou accept not

The worship the heart lifts above

   And the Heavens reject not?

The desire of the moth for the star,

   Of the night for the morrow,

The devotion to something afar

   From the sphere of our sorrow.
