追悼録 - Evel Knievel 享年69歳

私がまだ子供の頃、やたら派手な星条旗の服を着て、
全然意味なくオートバイでトラックを飛び越えるスタントを売り物にしている
おじさんがいました。

　　When I was a kid, there was some guy who, clad in a gaudy stars and stripes outfit,
　　would jump over trucks on a motorcycle for no apparently reason to make a living.

その名もイーヴル･クニーヴル。Evel Knievel.

何この人、とか思いながら、子供達の(男の子達の?) 中では絶大な人気を
保っていたこの人。。。

　　Although I didn't quite get it, he was enormously popular among kids (boys?).

亡くなりました。

　　He recently passed away.

結構失敗もして、体中の骨を折るような大怪我もしています。
でもやり続けました。失敗を見ることによって、仕組まれきった
芝居でなくて、リアルな挑戦だったのが判りました。

　　He'd occasionally fail his stunt, sometimes suffering grave injury that would break
　　all kinds of bones in his body. But he kept doing this. By witnessing the failure,
　　I knew it was for real and not some safely choreographed show piece.

峡谷をロケットつきバイクで飛び渡ろうとして届かず
(安全のためにつけていたパラシュートが時期尚早に開いたとの事)
パラシュートで降下に終わったり。。。

　　One famous stunt was his attempt to cross a canyon in a rocket, which failed due to
　　premature deployment of the safety parachute. In this one, he safely descended into the
　　river below.

自分の話も嘘なのか本当なのかともかく大掛かりな人でした。

　　Some of his tales were hard to believe as true, but everything about him was larger than
　　life. R.I.P.

YouTubeでEvel Knievelって検索すると玩具で撮るお笑いビデオってジャンルが確立されてるらしく、下のようなビデオがいっぱい出てくる。

やっぱり僕らのくらいの年代の人には愛されてるんだと思うな。

今は息子が後をついでるんだけど、親父を超えてないなぁ。ご冥福をお祈りします。

なんか150年ぐらい前に西部の開拓地にいたようなやつだよね。。。
詐欺師だったり、トランプの賭け事で儲けたり。
