shalt について
十戒　　　＜Ten Commandments＞
1. Thou shalt have no other gods before me.
私のほか何者をも神としてはならぬ。
2. Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image.
自分のために偶像を作ってはならぬ。
3. Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain.

簡単そうに見えて非常に難しい。手におえない。勉強が必要だ。

リンカーンの演説を暗記する（８）

It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us – that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion -- that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain -- that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom -- and that (4)government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.

（４）　government of the people
「人民の」と簡単に和訳はしてみても、何のことか意味不明である。
説がいろいろある。

所有を表すof である。　
　　人民が所有する・・・

目的（対象）を表すof である。　統治governの対象が人民である
　　王や、貴族が人民を対象として統治していた時代は終わり、by(人民の手により)for(人民の利益のために)　of 人民自身を統治する・・・
その考えの人の訳は「そして人々を、人々自身の手によって、人々自身の利害のために統治することを」となっている。

それぞれ意味がありそうだが、中国語訳では「民有」となっているそうだ。

私自身は未だに決めかねている。リンカーンよ答えてくれー！

government of the people と、リンカーンは話した後、しばし間をおいて
by the people, for the people と続けたという説もある。
そうすると government of the peopleが主語であり　by...,for...はその説明（同格）となる。
ああ難しい！

訳例：
その大事業とは、われわれがこれらの名誉の戦死からいよいよ決意をもって、戦死者が全力をもって身を捧げた大義へと身を捧げることです。その大事業とは、これらの戦死者の死を無駄にしないようにと固く誓うことです。その大事業とは、神の庇護のもとにこの国に新たな自由が生まれるようにすることです。その大事業とは、人民の、人民による、人民のための政治をこの地上から滅びないようにすることなのです。

(4)government of the people の　of をどのように訳せばいいか

resolve 決意する
perish 消え去る、滅びる

(1)the unfinished work
(2)that…., that…, that … ,and that…. とthat 節が４文並べてある。これらの節は
the great task の内容を説明する。文法的には同格である。

(3)ここで何故　shall not have died と「未来完了形」が使われているかだ。
the dead が主語だから、すでに死んだ者たちが、将来あの死はむだにであることにはならないだろうということか？　
ネイティブに聞いてみた。
that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain.
これをrewrite させたら
We must make certain that the men who died fighting for our ideas did not die for no reason
「無駄死にではなかった」ことを明確にしたいという内容だという。

shall の用法：単純未来もある　意思未来もある　　
I shall do my best.
I shall return.私は必ず戻ってくる （ 第二次大戦中にマッカーサーが日本軍に追われてフィリピンを去るときに言った言葉）

ご存知の　２人称、３人称のshall もある。あまり入試で見かけなくなった。
You shall have a new bicycle for your birthday.
= I will give you a new bicycle for your birthday.
No one shall stop me. = I won’t let anybody stop me.

ネイティブさんはさらにshall = shalt
Thou shalt not kill. という言葉も書いた。
新約聖書「マタイによる福音書」5章21節

約例：世界はここでわれわれが言ったことにはたいして注意を払いもしなければ、後世まで記憶することもないでしょう。しかし彼らがここで行ったことは決して忘れることなどありえません。

It is for us ,the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced.

このit もit…to構文であろうが、ネイティブに聞いてもはっきりしない。古い文にはよくあることだと言うだけだが・・・

つまり　it is 形容詞　for 〜　to ならば現代の一般的な英文だ。ところが形容詞がない。

むろん　be dedicated なのは　we ( for us ) である。
一瞬、強調構文かとも思ったが、言語学者に聞くコネクションもなく、疑問のままである。
ご意見を求めています。

thus far so nobly ……これほどまでにも気高く　
演説の効果のためか　すごい強調だ

訳例：ここで戦ったものがこれまで気高く推し進めてきた未完の仕事に、ここで新たに身を捧げるのはむしろ生き残ったわれわれです

But, in a larger sense, we can not dedicate -- we can not consecrate -- we can not hallow -- this ground. （１）The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated (２)it, far (３)above our poor power to add or detract.
(1) 文と文が並べてあるが、実はこの間にいわゆる「省略」があり、それを読み取ることも
　　大切な読解の技法である。入れるべき接続詞は？
(2) it とは何をさしているか
(3) 訳しなさい

　　hallow 神聖化する

　　detract 減ずる
　　consecrate 神聖な場所とする

（１）Because 我々が神聖化できないその理由は・・・と読みたい。暗記していると、その理由は
　　　・・・と頭の中に浮かんでくる。訳例は・・・だからです　としている。
（２）this ground
（３）我々の乏しい能力ではとても付け加えたり減じたりはできない
例：　far above my comprehension　　とても理解できない
約例：
しかしより広い意味でいえば、私達はこの大地を捧げられない−神聖化しえない−清められないのです。ここで奮闘した勇敢な者たちは、生ける者も死せる者たちがすでにここを神聖化してしまい、なにかを足したり取り除いたりするわれわれの貧弱な能力など、それにまったくおよばないものだからです。
