Feeling as if not in Japan

Today I went to a conference on automatic software engineering, and attended the reception, and had a really special experience for me.

I was talking with a man from the United States but in his talk he mentioned that he had been studying some of the Asian languages for several years. I was impressed so much about that, because I didn't expect an American who was studying the language used in the far east which is very far away from where he lives.

As a Japanese who thinks that none of the foreigners speak or even learn the language spoken in this country, it was so surprising to hear it's not the case, and I was becoming to believe that some of the western people regard that people outside are equal (because I was in part biased for some of western people to have the ethnocentric view when facing strange cultures.)

We walked from the conference venue to his hotel, exchanging some ideas about each other's culture along the way. What was lucky, or rather unlucky, for me was that I had so many questions to ask that I didn't have to express any feeling I had about things that happen in the world.

Anyway what was strange for me, you know, was that after talking all the things in English I had a feeling as if I unexpectedly dropped in on an Asian modern city other than Tokyo and the feeling lasted for a couple of hours even I was at the Maruzen bookshop, watching things around me with a great curiosity, feeling weird to have come across an English CD played aloud which just said meaningless English sentences mostly. Noticing objectively that there must be a certain amount of needs of learning English for the local people here, it seemed odd never to notice the English signs nor the English menus for foreigners. Even though Tokyo has evolved much more as an international city than ever, there should still be quite a lot of things to be fixed for them.

I was still feeling the strange feeling when I took the Yamanote train to get back home, but suddenly I was getting asleep and the . . . feeling . . . wa . . s . . . a . l . . . l . . . . . go . . . ne . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . zzz







気づいたときにはそんな不思議な気持ちは全部どこかに消えてしまっていて、後に残ったのは電車に乗り過ごしていたという事実だけでした。

日本人の英語

残念ながら、ここで日本人の英語を語れるほど英語と日本の英語教育に精通していないのですが、
日本人がよくしてしまう英語の問題点をわかりやすく述べている本を発見しました。
その名も「日本人の英語」（マーク・ピーターセン著、岩波新書）

日本人的な英語の疑問（たいていは中学・高校時代になんとなく思っているが結局よくわからない説明でうやむやにされたもの）に対して、ネイティブイングリッシュスピーカーの視点から、完璧な日本語で的確に答えていて、読んでいると「あぁ、なるほど！」とスッキリすることの連続です。

たとえば日本人にとってなじみの薄い冠詞、それの説明を一部引用しますと、

「日本の英文法書では"a(an)"の「用法と不使用」を論じるとき、「名詞にaがつくかつかないか」あるいは「名詞にaをつけるかつけないか」の問題として取り上げるのが普通である。ところが、これは非現実的で、とても誤解を招く言い方である。
（中略）
もし「つける」で表現すれば、「aに名詞をつける」としかいいようがない。「名詞にaをつける」という考え方は、実際には英語の世界には存在しないからである。」

こんな説明は今まで見たことなかったけれど、先を読み進めていくと、ネイティブスピーカーはまず、対象とするものの意味的カテゴリー（いろいろある中のひとつのものか、特定のものか、それとももっと抽象的なものか）を考えて冠詞をつけたあとで、実際の名詞を探すのだ、という説明を見ると、なるほどだからこそ冠詞が先で実際の名詞が後という語順になっているのだと納得できます。

この種の本が貴重なのは、そもそもネイティブスピーカーだからといってその思考方法を十分に理解しているかと言われるとそうではないということと、その思考方法を適切な外国語（今回の場合日本語）で説明することもまた難しいからです。自分でしゃべってる言語って、たいてい当たり前に使っていてなぜその構造になっているかとか、そもそもどんな構造になっているのかって考えることがほとんどないので、そこが非常に難しいわけです。（この前日本語の「ん」の発音が３種類あるという話を友達がしていて、それが自分には感動的でした。「ワンタンメン館」の「ん」は全部違うそうで、実際言ってみると本当に微妙に音が違うんですよ！）

ということで、この貴重な本をぜひ一度手にとってご覧あれ。初版が1988年に出版されている、もう20年ほど前の本なので、知っている人は知っている本なのでしょうが、いずれにせよこれは相当オススメです。目からうろこ、間違いなしです。

英語の複数形、難しい

日本語ではあいまいだけど英語でははっきりしている概念の一つに、単数形・複数形の違い
があると思います。日本語だと「それ」といっていくつかのものを同時に指すことは出来ますし、
ものが複数個あるからといって動詞を変えたりする必要もありません。
だから、さっき話してたことが一つのものについてかいくつかのものについてだったかを考える
ことなく、文を続けることが出来ます。

しかし、英語だと…ここが厳密なので本当に大変です。日本語ではそもそも話すときに
単数か複数かを記憶する必要がないのに、英語では必要ときたら。。。

つまり：
「多くの若者は渋谷に遊びに行く。」
　　　　↑若者が複数人いるかどうかすら気にする必要がない

ただし、それが英語になると、
「Many young people go an play around Shibuya.」
　　　　　　　　　　　　　↑　　↑主語が複数であることをここまで覚えていないといけない

ということで、自分で英語を使うときにはよく三単現の"s"が抜けたりします。
特に主語が長い場合にはその傾向が顕著に見られます。

たぶん慣れの問題だとは思いますがこれに関してはまったく慣れていませんね。
本当に慣れる日が来るのでしょうか？

最近になって民主的メディアがNSAの盗聴や秘密の牢獄について報道していることをふまえています。

・"they're just rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic."
もうすぐ沈む運命にあるという意図でタイタニックが使われています。
甲板にある椅子を並べ替えたところで沈むタイタニックのように、
人員配置を変更しても結局沈むアメリカ政府、という意味です。

・"they are rearranging the deck chairs on the Hindenburg!"
ヒンデンブルグ号という大きな飛行船が爆発した事故がありました。

・"By the way, Mr. President, thank you for agreeing to be on my show. I was just as shocked as everyone here is, I promise you."
大統領のことをこれだけこき下ろしてきたのに、大統領がもう一度コルベールのコメディに
来てくれると言った（という振りをした）ところが面白いようです。

・"I've got Frank Rich, but we can bump him. And I mean bump him. I know a guy. Say the word."
二つ目のbump himは「殺る」（と書いて「やる」と読む）という意味だそうです。

・"They still support Rumsfeld. Right, you guys aren't retired yet, right? Right, they still support Rumsfeld."
軍の長官はラムズフェルド国防長官の下で働いているので。

・"It's like boxing a glacier. Enjoy that metaphor, by the way, because your grandchildren will have no idea what a glacier is. "
地球温暖化でそのうち氷河がなくなるだろうという疑念をおもしろおかしくしています。

・"John McCain, what a maverick! Somebody find out what fork he used on his salad, because I guarantee you it wasn't a salad fork. This guy could have used a spoon! There's no predicting him."
マケイン上院議員は共和党にとらわれない行動をすることが多いそうです。

・"Mayor Nagin is here from New Orleans, the chocolate city! Yeah, give it up. Mayor Nagin, I'd like to welcome you to Washington, D.C., the chocolate city with a marshmallow center."
ネーガン市長はニュー・オーリンズの市長です。
ニュー・オーリンズはその黒人の比率の高さからチョコレート・シティーと形容されることがあるのですが、
ワシントンのほとんどは黒人なのだけれども連邦政府機関の中だけは白人が多いということを
チョコレートとマシュマロを使って表現しています。

・"And of course he brought along his lovely wife Valerie Plame. Oh, my god! Oh, what have I said? I am sorry, Mr. President, I meant to say he brought along his lovely wife Joe Wilson's wife. Patrick Fitzgerald is not here tonight? OK. Dodged a bullet."
前駐イラク大使であったジョセフ・ウィルソンの妻、ヴァレリー・プレームは実は
CIAのスパイで、それがばらされたことによって問題が起こったのですが、
それをネタにしています。
パトリック・フィッツジェラルドはその漏洩の調査をしていた特別検察官。

・"new press secretary, Tony Snow. Secret Service name, "Snow Job.""
snowjobには「手の込んだ嘘」という意味があるそうです。

・"Big shoes to fill. Scott McClellan could say nothing like nobody else."
前の報道官であるスコット・マクレランが、記者会見の場で
もっともらしい言葉を並べているにも関わらずよく考えてみると
何も言っていないことと同じだということをネタにしています。

・"Mr. President, I wish you hadn't made the decision so quickly, sir."
新しい報道官の選任にコルベールが満足行っていない、という設定で、
その後で自分の「理想的」な記者会見を行ったビデオを見せています。

記者達の質問は実は今までの記者会見から切り貼りしたもので、
それに対してコルベールが後付けで面白く答えたものを組み合わせています。

さて、いかがでしょうか。
なんだかこれぞアメリカンジョークという感じがしませんか？
でも、アメリカ人の人たちが笑っているポイントが微妙に理解が出来ない部分もあったり…
こういう側面から文化の違いを見てみるのもおもしろいなあと思いました。

To set my thoughts free

Sometimes I feel like I want to make a complaint in English.
This is mostly because I want to express things
but I don't want people concerning me to read it
(or understand it.)

I was drinking with people in my lab today.
And almost whenever I introduce a topic that we (I thought) can taik on,
someone (to be straightforward, my superior)
blamed me implicitly that it was not the right topic.

Yes I agree with the fact that it was actually not the right one,
but the way he said it was not the one we feel confortable.
In fact he was just blaming directly the person to introduce the topic.

I realized then that how to blame your subordinates is really a difficult problem...
If you don't have a reputation from your subordinates that your are a reliable man,
then you don't have the right to blame them, I mean.
Even if you were in that situation and blamed them,
your subordinates wouldn't get your words literally and they would just be let to be repelled.

Sometimes I wish that I can communicate with people in my lab in English instead of Japanese.
Why I am talking about this is that Japanese has extremely honorific words.
Or it might not be able to be described as them.
In the Japanese culture, respect to elder people is naturally there
including not to bend what elder people think.
It may be related to the culture they have,
but I just want to acknowledge the differece in the people around me
and people to acknowledge that things...
though it may be difficult in Japan as such a uniform country.

so that I can go to bed.

I just feel sorry about this.
And anyone who wondered why I don't write it in Japanese,
I will write in Japanese in the next article
