旅行記

 

 

 

　イタリア最南端に Catanzaro という街があります。

 

 

 

 

 

　何処か遠い所へ旅をしたいなと思う時、「 旅行記 」 の類に目を落とします。

 

 

　南イタリアに関する旅行記では、G. R. Gissing の By the Ionian Sea を好みます。旧所名跡を手放しで美辞礼賛するといった筆致が行間に全く見当たらない、一風変わったこの旅行記は、南イタリア特有の物憂げな情景を明瞭に描き出します。Gissing 特有の乾いた筆遣いを辿ると、上辺に張り付く表皮ではない、深層から溢れる 「 南 」 の物憂げな空気が漂います。

 

 

　南イタリアを melancholic に彷徨う Gissing も、最南端の街 Catanzaro は気に入ったらしく、旅行記の中でも相応の頁を割いています。イタリア半島の正に 「 脚裏 」 ちょうど親指の付け根の部分に位置する Catanzaro の街。取り立てて何もない、小高い丘の上にある小さな街 ・・・ しかし、この街から眺めるイオニア海の色合いは、何物にも代えがたい情景を旅人の胸に刻んだのでしょう。物憂げな旅人の目線を捉えて離さない、Catanzaro の情景を想像するだけで、「 心の旅 」 も充分に満足を得ます。

 

 

　

　旅行記に目を落とし、未だ見ぬ街を思い浮かべる 「 旅 」 に出るのも、時として良いものです。

 

 

 

Catanzaro must be one of the healthiest spots in Southern Italy;

perhaps it has no rival in this respect among the towns south of Rome.

I should like to visit Catanzaro in the summer; probably one would have

all the joy of glorious sunshine without oppressive heat, and in the

landscape in those glowing days would be indescribably beautiful.

  E dopo alquanti di partitosi Melisso da Giosefo e tornato a casa sua,
