Mt. Fuji has an altitude of 3776 meters, and at its top the scattering and absorption by the earth atmosphere is expected to be low. However, the investigation on the sky condition has not yet been performed. We present the sky condition of the top of Mt. Fuji, based on the all-sky camera that monitors the clouds. The number of the photometric nights at the zenith are 30% in the nights with available datasets, although it is the preliminary result.

Observation of aerosol-cloud-precipitation interaction in the free troposphere using Mt. Fuji

We simultaneously collected aerosol, gases, and cloud water at the summit of Mt. Fuji, which is located in the free troposphere, from 14 July to 24 August 2012. Our objectives were to elucidate background concentration levels of gases (acidic gases and volatile organic compounds), aerosol (water-soluble components, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, humic-like substances), cloud water and rainwater in the free troposphere over Japan, to make clear the characteristics of background pollution in the air mass by the long-range transportation or upslope wind from the base of the mountain during the daytime in the summer, and to ascertain aerosol-cloud-precipitation interactions. Chemical analyses of the collected samples are now ongoing. We are also analyzing the observation data.

Permafrost study on Mt. Fuji: the second phase of a research project

This research is a part of our interdisciplinary research project to understand permafrost on Mt. Fuji. In 2012, we continued to maintain the monitoring systems of soil temperatures and micrometeorological parameters in the summit area. Permafrost temperatures in the 10 m-deep borehole were successfully monitored through the second year, although the data logger failed in the first winter by lightning. Electrical resistivity survey was applied to visualize permafrost below the borehole. The other recorded data were also successfully retrieved and will be analyzed. We dug a new 3.6 m-deep borehole at the site where volcanic heat had been detected at the surface until 1969. The borehole revealed recent permafrost development at the site. In addition, large-scale topographic maps were drawn to monitor topographic changes in the summit area.

Size distribution of aerosol particles, cloud condensation nuclei concentration, radon concentration, and ion concentration was measured continuously at the summit during July 20 and Aug. 23, 2012. Figure 1 shows the time variations of concentration of particles larger than, 0.3?m 1?m, 5?m in diameter measured with an optical particle counter (RION KR12). Concentration of particles larger than 5?m showed high values in daytime by local influence. More detailed discussion will be done comparing with other elements.
