Pitfall 2

As I wrote before "skinship" is not English.
Once I used this word 100% believing it was English. But the person I was talking with said,
"What? Kinship?" I said confidently, "No, Skinship." "I don't know the word. There is no such a word." "What?"

Well, it was created by an American phycologist, so it's English, but the word and the idea didn't catch on in the U.S. Here is the story I believe I once read in "Gendai yougo no Kisochishiki", or "Basic Knowledge on Modern Words and Terms"．But ever since I can't find the book nor find the origin of the word anywhere. But still I don't think I have such a good imagination to conjure up this kind of story, so I believe I read it somewhere.　(I'm humble, aren't I?)

Sometime in 1950s, there was a conference for phycologists. In one of the lectures, an American phycologist used the word "skinship". He/she had made it to mean exactly what it means today in Japanese language. But it attracted little attention from his/her colleagues from the U.S. It was Japanese phycologists who were impressed with the idea and brought it back to Japan, where it spread like grass fire.

So "skinship" sounds like English and I think we can say it is English which works only in Japan. And you know what the real pitfall is? This kind of knowledge contributes very little to improve our speaking ability.　(^_^;)

前に書きましたが、“スキンシップ”は英語ではありまセン。
以前１００％英語だと信じて使ったら、“え？何？Kinship(親族関係）？”といわれました。そこで私は自信をもって“いや、Skinship."　“その言葉しらない。そんな言葉ない。”“へ？”

この言葉はアメリカ人の心理学者によって作られたらしいから、一応英語だけど、アメリカでは広がりませんでした。前に“現代用語の基礎知識”か何かで読んだと思うのだけど、それ以来その本が見つからないし、どこにもこの言葉の語源が見つかりません。でも、私がそんな想像力があるわけないから、どこかで読んだのだと思います。（私って、謙虚。。）

１９５０年代のいつか、心理学学会がありました。
その中でアメリカ人の心理学者が“Skinship"という言葉を使った。今の日本語で使われている意味と全く同じ意味をあらわすためにその人が作ったのでした。でも、アメリカ人の心理学者には広まらず、代りにその言葉を国に持って帰り広めたのは日本の心理学者たちでした。

だから、"Skinship"は英語だけど、日本でしか通じない英語。
で、ほんとうの落とし穴は、こういうことを知っていても英語を話すのが上手くなるというわけではないということデス。(^_^;)

There are some words that are brought from Engish to Japanese, but used in a different way.

In Japanese, they say "a very moody restaurant". This is supposed to mean "a restaurant with a good atmosphere". But the word "moody" has a bad meaning in English. When used as in "She is so moody", it means "Her moods change very quickly. She is happy some time and next time she is angry."

Another example is "homey".
As we have a good impression for "home", "homey" sounds good, too. I understand this is OK to use for things, like "homey atmosphere", but when it is used for people like "She is homey.", it sounds like "She is not very attractive." or "She doesn't live in this neighborhood."
Once I was reading "the Bridges of Madison County" and at the scene when the heroin meets the hero, it is written like "he doesn't look homey". In Japanese translation, it was translated to "he doesn't look like a family-oriented person". But I guess what the author was trying to say is "he is not unattractive"or "he doesn't look like a local". If we want to say someone is "家庭的", maybe we should use "domestic", or in a sentence like "She is very family-oriented and very good at housework."

One more word that came up to me just now is "challenge". In Japanese, it has a good positive meaning. But it is a tricky word. If we say, "I'll challenge you." , in many cases it means "I'll defy you!" and sounds like we are picking up a fight.

There are so many pitfalls when using English.
I have fallen in many of those countless times.....

One more tricky word I just remember is "skinship". This doesn't work AT ALL. It's getting longer, so I'll write about it some day.

英語からきた日本語で英語とは違う意味でつかわれている英語がある。

日本語で「とてもムーディーなレストラン」　これは「とてもいいムードのレストラン」という意味なんだけど、moodyは英語では悪い意味。「彼女はムーディーだ」といったら、「彼女は気分がすぐ変わる。ハッピーだと思ったら、すぐ怒る。」みたいな意味。

"Homey"も　"Home" は“家庭”だから、“家庭的”かな？と思うとちょっとちがうみたい。
物に使う場合、たとえば"homey atmosphere"は「家庭的な雰囲気」でOKだけど、人につかって、"She is homey."というと、“彼女は見栄えがよくない”または“この辺のひとではない”ということになるようだ。
「マジソン郡の橋」のヒロインが男の主人公に会う場面で、“彼は　homey　にはみえない”と（英語で）書いてあった。訳書では「彼は家庭的な男にはみえない。」となってたけど、私は「彼は不細工ではない」または「地元の人間には見えない。」が著者が意味していることだと思う。誰かが「家庭的だ」といいたいときは"domestic"を使うか、文章で「彼女は家族を大切にする人で家事がとてもうまい。」とすればいいかな。

もうひとつ、今思い出した。“チャレンジ"。日本語では積極的でいい意味。でもこれは要注意ワード。
「あなたに挑戦します。」の意味で"I'll challenge you."を使うとたいていの場合、「あなたに反抗します。」になってケンカを売ってるように聞こえるらしい。

英語には落とし穴がたくさんありマス。いままで何度も落ちてきました。。。

もうひとつ思い出した。"Skinship" これは全然通じない。長くなってきたので後日書きマス。

ヘンな英語２

Once I saw a woman wearing a coat which a big Donald Duck's face and "I'm happy!" logo embroidered on the back. It was a nice coat, but I saw her at a funeral! What's the matter with us?
We are too indifferent about English printed on clothes. English logos are just additions to the design for us.　

あるとき、おっきなドナルドダックの顔と、"I'm happy! - うれしいよ！"　と背中に刺繍してある黒のコートをきた女の人をみた。素敵なコートだったけど、そこはお葬式だったのだ！　どうなってんの、私たち日本人は？　着るものについている英語に無関心すぎるよ〜。英語のロゴは私たちにとってただのデザインなのだ。

ヘンな英語

ヘンな英語をみたら書きとめておこう。

１．中学生の着ていたスウェットシャツの英語
　　"They call me queer." "queer"ってきみは本当にそう呼ばれていいの？

２．エプロンの胸元のワンポイント
　　"Flesh Girl" - それをいうなら、"Fresh Girl" でしょう。"Flesh"は“肉”です。この話をネイティブにしたら、女の子をナンパする場所のことを口語で"Flesh pot"というといってました。"Fresh Girl"っていうのもヘンだそうです。

３．消費者金融の“アイ○”が“ディック”って名前になった（または支店名がディックという名前に統一されたらしい）。本当にそれでいいんでしょうか。一応ネイティブに変な意味がないかたしかめたんでしょうか。。。


When I see strange English signs, printings, etc. used in Japan, I'll write them down here.

1. On a sweatshirt a junior high school boy was wearing
"They call me queer." Are you sure you want to be called "queer"?

2. On an apron
"Flesh girl" I guess they wanted to say "Fresh girl". "Flesh" means "meat". When I told this to a native speaker of English, he said that places where boys pick up girls are called "Flesh Pot". He said even "Fresh girl" was strange.

3. A consumer banking company "AIKU" was renamed to "Dick". (Or they renamed all their outlets "Dick". Are they really really sure they are happy with the new name? Have they ever tried to make sure it doesn't have an obscene meaning?
