Latin Words

Recently I heard the U.S. Secretary of State, Madam Rice say “status quo ante”.
Latin words sound intelligent.

Here are some Latin words used as they are in English.
I have learned these along the way of studying English.
Do you know some more?

最近、ライス国務長官が”status quo ante”という語句を使っているのをきいた。
ラテン語はインテリっぽく聞こえるね〜。

現在の英語でそのまま使われているラテン語を書いてみます。
英語を勉強していて覚えたラテン語です。これ以外に何かご存知ですか？

お返し、見返り。
quid pro quo についてはこのブログでもう２回も書いたことがある。しつこい。

データは複数形。単数形はdatumです。
criterion criteria
基準　　criterion が単数。criteriaが複数。
alumnus 　
男子卒業生(単数) 　　alumni(複数)

午前　　ante meridiem　の略
p.m.
午後　　　post meridiem の略
A.D.
紀元　　anno dominiの略　　イギリスでAD，ＢＣともピリオドをつけないそうで。
AD は数字の前でも後ろでもいいけど、BCはBefore Christ なので必ず後ろにつけるそうです。
ところで、A.D. 、B.C.はキリスト教に関連した語句なので、すべての人が使えるようにできた言葉ってなんでしたか？　ちょっと、調べてきまーす。どろん。・・・
はいわかりました。　A.D. が　Common Era(C.E.) B. C. が　Before Common Era(B.C.E.)　です。使われてるのみたことないけど。

I have learned that in the Britain they do not put periods with AD and BC.
You can put AD before or after year number, but BC stands for “Before Christ” so it should be put after year numbers.
By the way, A.D. and B.C. are related to Christianity, so new words have been created for anyone to use. What are they? I’m going out to look it up. Vanish!
OK, I have found them. Common Era(C.E.) has been created to replace A.D. and “Before Common Era”(B.C.E.) to replace B.C. I have never seen them in use.

考えてみると、このラテン語のほとんどを“ＮＨＫビジネス英語”でおぼえた。
やっぱり、まじめに聞かなくっちゃなあ・・・。

Come to think of it, I learned most of these Latin words in “NHK Business English”.
I should listen to it seriously.

summa は　summit と前半の語源が一緒かな。magna は　magnitude と前半の語源が一緒かな。
どちらも程度が大きいイメージだったけど、sum のほうが上なんでしょうね。

"quid pro quo" again

Long time ago, I wrote about an expression “quid pro quo”.
It is a Latin phrase so it sticks out in English text, and some time ago I encountered it in almost every DVD and book I put my hands on.
I heard it for the first time in “Ally McBeal”, then “24”, “Memoirs of a Geisha”, “The Da Vinci Code”, and “Angels and Demon”.
And finally it appeared in “Business English” of NHK radio！

This is the explanation on the program that I dictated.

This is a Latin phrase that’s used in English.  Literally it means “something for something”.  But it tends to be used in a context of negotiation where if we give you something we expect something back.  Similar phrases in different contexts are “tit for tat” or you could even say, “Scratch my back, and I’ll scratch yours.”

ずいぶん前に、”quid pro quo”という表現について記事を書きました。
ラテン語なので英語の文章の中で目立つし、わたしが手をつけたDVDや本、ほとんどすべてで見かけました。
最初は「アリーmyラブ」で、その後、「２４」、「さゆり」、「ダビンチコード」「天使と悪魔」。そして、ついに！！！「ビジネス英語」にまで取り上げられたんです！！

番組の説明を聞き取りました。

これは英語で使われるラテン語のフレーズです。文字通りには「何かに対して何か」という意味です。でも、何かをあげたらお返しを期待するという交渉事でよく使われます。
違った場面での似たようなフレーズは、“tit for tat” （お返し・しっぺ返し）とか、“Scratch my back, and I’ll scratch yours.”（わたしの背中を掻いてくれれば、あなたの背中をかいてあげましょう。-　魚心あれば水心）ともいえます。

発音は「クウィドゥ　プロ　クオー」って聞こえます。

On Jan. 1st or was it on 2nd? Anyway I was watching ABC news, and I cried "Not again!" It's the expression "quid pro quo".
It was when I was watching the TV show "Ally McBeal" that I encountered the expression for the first time. About one and half years ago. Then I saw and/or heard it in "24" twice, "The Da Vinci Code", "Angels and Demons", "Memoirs of a Geisha", and maybe more somewhere else. Its meaning is "payback", "kickback", or "something given or paid in return". As this comes from Latin, it stands out in English sentences. Even so, isn't it used too often? Is it a kind of buzz word?

元旦か、２日、ABCニュースを見ていて「また〜？！」となった。"quid pro quo"という表現。最初にこれに遭遇したのは「アリーマイラブ」を見ていたときだった。一年半くらい前かな。それから、「２４」で２回、「ダビンチコード」、「天使と悪魔」、「さゆり」、たぶんほかでも耳にしたり目にしたりしている。意味は「見返り」「報酬」。ラテン語なので英語の文章の中で目立つんだけど、それでも使われすぎてない？一種の流行語ってやつか？
