Last weekend was the only one in months that had nothing scheduled on my planner.
But I fell prey into the tactics of a DVD rental place, Geo.
They rented DVDs at 70 yen, and my husband and I rented ¡È24¡É 5th season.
I shouldn't have!
I had planned to write new articles and visited many of my blog friends and leave messages.
New Ohio¡Çs law : Do not start watching ¡È24¡É when you have something to do.

When I watch DVDs with my husband, we set the subtitles in English and the sound in Japanese. When I watch alone, I set both in English.
I wanted to listen to English, but in any case, the English used in ¡È24¡É is too difficult for me.

Enjoying the show, I noticed a Japanese word the main character used.
I guess many of English speaking people do not know it comes from Japanese.
It¡Çs ¡Èhoncho¡É . It is spelled ¡Èhoncho¡É, but originally in Japanese it is ¡Èhancho¡É. Yes, ¡ÈÈÉĹ¡É.
Are there any other words like that, which they use without knowing they are from Japanese?

In the TV show ¡ÈFriends¡É, I once heard a Japanese word ¡ÈHibachi¡É.
It seemed English speaking people associate the famous restaurant, Benihana-style¡ÈÅ´ÈľơÉ, with the word.

Also in ¡ÈDesperate Housewives¡É, I heard ¡ÈZen¡É twice.
In the first episode of season one, there is this line, ¡ÈAnd then he got this Zen look on his face and said, ¡Ä..¡É.
In the second season, I remember a line ¡ÈI feel pretty Zen about that.¡É
But I guess people know clearly that this word ¡ÈZen¡É is from Japanese unlike ¡Èhoncho¡É.

Are there any English words borrowed from Japanese but English-speaking people do not realize they are from the language?

Now I can think of just one, ¡ÈTsunami¡É.

In the NHK ¡ÈBusiness English¡É on the topic ¡ÈRecruiting Top Talent¡É, the assistant instructor, Ms. Chris Matsushita mentioned ¡Èwere¡É in conditional sentences as below;

Quote,
Using ¡Èwere¡É in conditional sense in English is, I think, pretty much dying out of modern English.
But it does remain in this phrase. People will often say ¡ÈIf you were me¡É.
I seldom hear anyone say ¡Èif you was me¡É, it sounds uneducated.
In other contexts, ¡Èwere¡É used this way is slowly disappearing.
Unquote.

I had thought it was about ¡ÈIf I were¡É vs ¡ÈIf I was¡É, and dictated her comments as above.
But she talked about ¡ÈIf you were¡É. The ¡Èwere¡É used in ¡ÈIf you were me¡É is totally consistent with the basic use; ¡Èwere¡É for ¡Èyou¡É. What was her point?

Are people getting confused? Like, only ¡Èwere¡É used to be used in conditional sentences. But now ¡Èwere¡É and ¡Èwas¡É are used like in non-conditional sentences. Is she sensing only ¡Èwas¡É will be used in those contexts? Am I over-interpreting?

This is Uncle Sam.
I have heard President Lincoln was the model for Uncle Sam, but I just found out that he wasn¡Çt. But the whisker were added in reference to him later.
According to Wikpedia, there was a meat supplier named Samuel Wilson in Troy, New York. He supplied meat to the Army and he had the barrels of meat branded ¡ÈU.S.¡É meaning ¡ÈThe United States.¡É¡¡The soldiers jokingly said it was short for Uncle Sam. This is the origine of ¡ÈUncle Sam¡É. In 1961, the Congress adopted a resolution saying "Resolved by the Senate and the House of Representatives that the Congress salutes Uncle Sam Wilson of Troy, New York, as the progenitor of America's National symbol of Uncle Sam."
