Pet Peeve

I found another pet peeve of mine. (I am a prissy middle-aged woman.)

Sometimes periods "." instead of Japanese periods "。” are used for Japanese text.
Like, わたしはねむい.” It should be “わたしはねむい。”　I feel I find more of this usage these days.

When this usage of periods goes on and on, it make me feel queasy. "I need to find enlightenment."


また、いやなもの見つけた。（うるさいおばさん〜）

日本語の文章なのに、文の終わりに”。-　まる”でなく、".　-　ピリオド"をつけてあるもの。
“わたしはねむい。”であるべきところを、“わたしはねむい.”になっているもの。最近多いような気がする。

こういうピリオドが続いていると、むかむかしてくる。（人間できてない。）

An Eye Opener

Amid the all-Japan high school baseball tournament this summer, I was doing the dishes with the TV on.
I don’t like baseball and do not know much about it.
On the TV screen, a player was trying “sukuizu” to score.
All these years, I have been wondering why the same play is called “bunt” one time and “sukuizu” another time. Once when I was in junior high, I remember asking my father who was a great baseball fan why was that. He was a man of few words, so he just said “You call it squeeze when you bunt with a runner on the third base.”
Doing the dishes, I remembered such a thing and suddenly I realized, “sukuizu” is “squeeze”! So to squeeze the runner on the third base, the batter tries to “bunt”! Woo, it’s an eye opener for me! Were you aware of that? Is it only me who was so slow?

Anyway, do you have similar experiences, like you suddenly realize something which you have been wondering for years?

夏の甲子園真っ盛りのころ、テレビをつけたまま皿洗いをしてました。
野球は好きじゃなくて、あまりしらないんです〜。
テレビでは、選手が「スクイズ」をしようとしてました。
長年、同じ「バント」が、あるときは「バント」と呼ばれたり「スクイズ」と呼ばれたりするのがなぜかわからなかったんです。中学生のとき、野球ファンだった父になぜか聞いたら、無口なひとだったので、「３塁に走者がいるときにバントすると“スクイズ”っていうんだ。」とだけ教えてくれました。
お皿洗いをしながらそんなことを考えてたら、突然ひらめきました！“スクイズ”って”squeeze”なんだ！　三塁にいる走者を”squeeze”しぼりだすために、バッターはバントをするんから“スクイズ”なんだ！
わお！目からうろこ〜！　皆さん、わかってました？　鈍いのわたしだけ〜？(^_^;)

2. On the day the textbooks of NHK English programs come out, do you go get them at a bookstore even if you don’t have any other business?
