お月見クイズ

There is a detective story or maybe it was just a detective quiz which I read when I was a child. I was so impressed that I remember it even now.

It went like this.

There was some kind of crime during the night.
The police found two suspicious men near the crime scene.
Both of them said that they were amateur astronomers and they were enjoying star gazing.
It was very easy to find which man was telling a lie.
The detective asked both to draw a half moon.

Can you guess why we can find a perpetrator of the crime by making them draw a half moon?

こんなお話です。

夜、なにかの犯罪が起こりました。
警察は犯罪現場の近くで二人の男を見つけました。
二人とも、自分は天文学マニアで星を観察していただけだといいます。
どちらがうそを言っているのか見つけるのは簡単でした。
刑事は、二人に半月の絵を書くようにいいました。

半月の絵を描くことでなぜ犯人が分かるのかわかりますか？？

Writing the answer, I suddenly realized. It may not be "a half moon" but "a crescent"!

The answer said as follows;

When we connect a side point of a half moon and the other with a line, the line should always go through the center of the moon , that means the line should be the diameter of the moon.

So some times we see an illustration of a moon like this ↓, but it is impossible.

So the half moon you draw does not fulfill this condition, you are no astronomer!

Science was and is never my cup of tea.
If I am mistaken, sorry!

半月の上のポイントと下のポイント（うー説明下手ですまんm(__)m）を線で結ぶと、その線は必ず月の中心を通る、つまり直径になるそうです。

なので、ときどき↑のようなイラストを見ることがあるけど、それはあり得ないらしい・・・

だから、描いた半月がその条件を満たしていなければ、あなたは天文学マニアではあり得なーい！ということになるそうです。

科学はわからないので、間違って覚えていたらすみません〜！！

Tonight it’s a full moon.

Did you do moon viewing by offering dumplings, pampas grass, Sake, etc?

It is said the moon influences our mood.
Is that scientifically proved?
Some say in Western culture, it is not a good idea to watch the moon for a long time, right? The theory says the word “lunatic” was created because the moon makes people mad. (“Lunar” means “of the moon”.) Also they have a legend of werewolves.
It’s much different from the Japanese way of acknowledging the moon.
We have created “the tale of Princess Kaguya”, “Sailor Moon”, “a rabbit pounding rice cake”, and most of all “moon viewing”.

Also it is said on full moon nights more crimes and traffic accidents happen.
Is it because the moon affects us or is it just because people tend to go out on full moon nights as it is brighter?

今夜は満月ですね〜。
お団子やススキ、お酒などでお月見しましたか？

お月さまは人の精神に影響を与えるという人もいますが、科学的に証明されていることなんですか？
西洋の文化では月をあまり長く見てはいけないといわれているんですよね？
“lunatic”（狂った、狂人）という単語は月が人と狂わせるというのが語源ですよね？（”Lunar” は「月の」という意味）　狼男の伝説もそれに由来しているとか・・。
日本人の月に対する態度とはかなり違っていますね。
「かぐや姫」、「セーラームーン」、「おもちをついているウサギ」それに「お月見」が日本人が月から生み出したものですもんね。

また、満月の夜は犯罪や交通事故が多いともいわれていますね。
あれは、月が人を狂わせるのか、単に満月の夜は明るいので外出する人が多いのか、どちら？

ひさびさの日本文化！

Time flies.
Time flies like an arrow.
Time is a traveler of one hundred generations and people are also travelers.
River water flows endlessly, but the water is not the same.
…..blah, blah, blah……even I myself know that I am trying to cook up the fact that I didn’t write as long as two weeks. (^_^;)

These days people get conned in bank transfer frauds, foods are doctored, city assembly members somewhere allegedly went on a sightseeing tour with taxpayers’ money saying it was a study tour, Yamamoto Mona defamed herself, so on and so forth. I just want to shout “What! Japanese people have become a bunch of liars??” Those incidents really turn me down. Compared to that, the lies I tell once in a while is just white lies….. Don’t you think so? Yes, yes, thank you. (← I'm asking and answering myself.)

By the way, I had an opportunity to think whether Japanese are a serious people without a sense of humor. So I gathered my thoughts like below.　It was difficult!

Are Japanese serious and do not have a sense of humor？
I would answer we are a serious people with a good sense of humor.
We often make puns, crack jokes, and enjoy listening to stand-up comedians and/or traditional comic stories.
Sometimes non-Japanese think of us not having humor, but I guess it is because few of us speak good English or other foreign languages and many can’t make ourselves understood as much as we want
What’s interesting is that while Japanese people understand humors, they are so serious that they developed even “humor” to a form of art. “Rakugo”, traditional Japanese sit-down comedy telling. is the example. “Kyogen”, traditional comic dramas, is another.
In the world of “Rakugo” and “Kyogen”, stories have been handed down from generation to generation while new stories are added and the performers train their next generation hard. The audience enjoys not only the storyline but also performers’ elocution, acting, facial expression, and so on while laughing a lot.
Are there any other cultures in which humor have become a form of art?
I think the Japanese is one of a few who have accomplished that.

行く川の流れは絶えずしてしかももとの水にあらず。・・・などといって、２週間もお休みしたことを煙に巻こうという魂胆は我ながらミエミエである。(^_^;)

最近は、振り込め詐欺事件、食品偽装事件、どこぞの市議の視察旅行疑惑、山本モナ事件（事件？）などなど、日本人ってうそつきばっかりじゃん！といいたくなるような事件が多くて嫌になりますねえ。それに比べたら、わたしのうそなんて、罪がないわぁ。ねえ。（←自己完結型人間！）

ところで、「日本人はユーモアがないまじめ一方の国民か？」と聞かれたら・・・？と考える機会があって、まとめてみました〜。難しかった〜。

日本人はまじめでユーモアのセンスがないか？
わたしなら、日本人はユーモアのセンスがあるまじめな国民だと答えます。
日本人はよくだじゃれや冗談を言ったり、漫才や伝統的なおもしろいお話を聞くのが好きです。
時々、日本人はユーモアのセンスがないなどと思われがちですが、それは英語などの外国語をつかって言いたいことが自由に言える人が少ないからだと思います
興味深いのは、日本人はユーモアを理解している一方で、とてもまじめなのでユーモアさえも芸術に発展させたということです。落語や狂言がその例です。
落語の世界では、お話は世代から世代に受け継がれ、また新作も加わっています。落語家は次の世代を厳しく訓練します。観客はお話だけでなく、落語家の語り口や演技、表情などを楽しみ大いに笑います。
ユーモアを芸術に高めた文化がほかにありますか？
日本人はそれを成し遂げた数少ない民族の一つだと思います。

Religions in Japan

VOIS - Volunteer Interpreters Shizuoka - の勉強会用に書いたものです。
通訳案内士試験の模擬として、「日本人の宗教観について身近な例を挙げて説明しなさい。」という質問に答えたものにちょっと加筆しました。（個人的な意見です。）
ノート代わりにここに写しておきます。

This is my answer to a mock question in Interpreter Tour Guide Exam, "Explain Japanese perception for relitions citing examples in daily life."　I have added some more explanations here.『It is just my own opinion.)
We are going to do this in class this afternoon.
I'm copying it just for a record.




What is your religion?
This is one of the most perplexing questions for most Japanese.

It is because religious belief is so deeply rooted in our life that we do not realize it comes from religions. Also we believe in several religions and when asked what religion we believe in, we don’t know which to answer and feel uneasy wondering maybe we are not religious people.

But Japanese religion is a mixture of Shinto, Buddhism, and Confucianism. Recently I feel Christianity also has greatly influenced Japanese way of thinking.

Shinto is at the core ofJapanese sense of purity and respect for nature, Buddhism has formed the life and death perception, Confucianism has formed our respect for seniority, and Christianity has brought in the perception of love.
For people who are monotheistic, it may seem odd but Japanese believe in various Gods and many of us have wedding rituals in Shinto or Christian style, and have funerals in Buddhist style. We ask how old you are because we need to know in order to pay respect to seniors.

Also we have rituals to purify the land in Shinto style when we build buildings, we conduct a series of rituals to welcome back the spirits of our dead family according to Buddhist teaching, we pay respect to seniors and teachers as taught by Confucian(although this custome has been fading fast in today’s Japan), and we celebrate Christmas and St. Valentine’s Day and other Christian special days as we have learned love is an important factor in life as Christ taught.



「あなたの信じる宗教はなんですか？」
多くの日本人にとってこの質問ほど当惑するものはありません。

宗教によって形成された信念が日常生活に深く浸透しすぎていてあたりまえになっており、信じているものが宗教から来ていると思っていないからです。
またいくつかの宗教を同時に信じていて、どの宗教を信じているのかと聞かれるとどれを答えていいかわからなくなり、もしかしたら信仰心がないのではないかと自分で自信がなくなってしまうのです。

でも、日本の宗教は神道、仏教、儒教が交じり合ったものです。最近はキリスト教の教えが日本人の考え方に大きな影響をあたえていると感じています。

神道は日本人の「穢れ」にたいする感覚と「自然に対する畏怖」を形成し、仏教は「生と死」に関する考えを、儒教は年上を敬う考え方を、そしてキリスト教は｢愛｣に関する考え方を形成してきたと思います。

一神教を信じる人たちにしたら変に思うかもしれませんが、日本人は神道式またはキリスト式で結婚式をあげ、お葬式は仏教式であげるのが一般的です。そして、儒教の教えの通り、年上は尊敬しなくてはならないので、人の年齢を知りたがります。

また、建物を建てるときは神道でお払いをしてもらい、仏教の教えの通り亡くなった祖先の魂を迎えるために一連の決まりごとをします。そして儒教の教えの通り、年上の人や教師はうやまうべきものです。（この点で、現在の日本では儒教の教えが一番薄れてきているようですが。）そして、キリスト教から、「愛」の大切さを知った日本人はクリスマス、セントバレンタインデーなどのキリスト教の行事をお祝いします。
