Amish Quilt

I made this quilt!

I wish I could say so.
In reality my sister made it.

I visited Amish Country in Ohio last year.

Amish people are famous for their self-sufficient life.

There I saw a lot of quilt works and especially liked this one in the above picture.

I don't remember how much that was or maybe it was not for sale.
I am far from a quilter, but my sister is, so we visited a lot of quilt shops and a quilt museum and took a lot of pictures.

About 3 months after the trip, I got a text mail from my sister saying "it's done!".
Opening the attached photo, lo and behold, I saw a replica of the quilt.

After negotiation(details omitted), the quilt is adorned the hall of my house.

It's interesting that even though my sister copied it by closely examining the photo, the finished work has some Japanese touch.

So now, how can I get her to make the heart-pattern quilt.
(I have no intention to make one! I simply can't".

これわたしが作りました〜！

と、いえたらいいな〜・・。実は姉が作りました〜。

去年オハイオのアーミッシュカントリーにいきました。
アーミッシュは自給自足をしていることで有名な人たちです。

そこでたくさんのパッチワークをみて、特にこの作品が気に入りました。

いくらか覚えてない。もしかして非売品だったかも。
わたしはパッチワークとは縁とゆかりもないですが、姉はパッチワークをするので、たくさんのキルトショップにキルトミュージアムを訪れてたくさん写真を撮りました。

旅行から３カ月後くらいに姉から「できた〜」というケータイメールをもらい、写メをみるとなんと、このキルトが！

交渉（細部省略）後、このキルトは現在うちの玄関に飾られてます〜。

姉は写真をよーく見て真似して作ったのですが、日本的な感じがするのはちょっとおもしろいです。

さて、次はどうやってハート柄のキルトを作らせようか…。(自分で作る気はさらさらない！できない！）

オハイオ / ヤードセール・クリスピークリームドーナッツ

On our way from Amish Country to Columbus, we found a yard sale on route 36 and dropped in.

The scenery along route 36 is very beautiful. The church in the picture I’m using by place of an avatar is on the route.
But there are so many roadkills on the road; my sister started counting the number and the count went up to 30 something for a one-hour drive. Most of them are raccoons, but this time I saw a small deer!

アーミッシュカントリーからコロンバスに向かう途中で、ヤードセールを発見！すかさず立ち寄りました。

３６号線の景色はとても美しい。アバター代わりに使っている写真の教会も３６号線沿いにあったもの。
でも、３６号線上にはたくさんの動物が死んでます。ついに姉は途中から数え始め、一時間のドライブ中３０いくつまで行きました。たいていはラクーンだけど、今回は小さな鹿も発見！

I bought this scale at the yard sale.
This is my favorite souvenir from this trip. It was only four dollars!
What am I going to do with it? …..Urrrr, I’m just displaying it….
Which did I like better, the scale itself or the price? …. Urrr, I would say the price…..　( ^_^; )

この天秤をヤードセールで買いました〜。
今回の旅行の一番のお気に入りのおみやげ。たった４ドル！
これで何するかって？・・・・えーと、飾っておくだけですけど・・・。
天秤そのものと値段とどちらをきにいったかって？　・・・えーと、どちらかっていうと値段のほうですけど・・・・。
( ^_^; )

Before we went there, we were talking about getting a new bag or suitcase to load a lot of souvenirs we had got.
At this yard sale, we found a small suitcase at the price of three dollars!
I was sure I was drawn there because of that. It was my fate. I got it without any hesitation.

買いすぎたお土産をいれるのにバッグかスーツケースを買おうと話していたら、このヤードセールで小さなスーツケースを発見！３ドル！
このためにこのヤードセールに引き込まれたと確信。運命だ・・・すかさず購入。

Yard sales meet my sense of money values.　( ^_^; )

ヤードセールはわたしの金銭感覚にあっている。( ^_^; )

Arriving Columbus, I went directly to the outlet of Krispy Kreme Doughnuts!
I had searched on the Net and had located the shop. Giggle.

Parking the car, I rushed out of it and scurried into the shop. Oink, oink, oink.

Oiiiiiiiinnnnkkkkkk! So many doughnuts I had been yearning for were glowing!

I chose 8 doughnuts. The clerk said the price would be the same even if I would buy 4 more doughnuts. Of course I took the advice. The price was less than 7 dollars for 1 dozen.
Furthermore, I got a discount coupon! Oink!
With the coupon, they would sell a dozen of original glazed doughnuts at the half price with a purchase of a dozen of any doughnuts. Oink, Oink!
But my stay in Columbus area is only for two days …..
Buuuuuut! We dropped in the store two days later on our way to the airport and got 2 dozens of the doughnuts at about 10 dollars!
Those have definitely made me into a piggy. Oiiiiinnnnkkkkk!　( ^_^; )

コロンバスに着いてすぐクリスピークリームドーナッツに直行。
出発前からネットでお店を調べておいたんですよ〜。うふっ。

駐車して、店に走りこむ。ブヒ、ブヒ、ブヒ！

ブヒーーーーーーーーン！　
憧れつづけたドーナツがたくさん輝いている！

ドーナツを８つ選んだら、店員があと４つ買っても同じ値段だよというので、モチロン購入。１ダースで７ドル弱でした。
その上、割引券をゲット！　ブヒッ！
ドーナツを１ダース買うと、オリジナルグレイズドドーナツ１ダースが半額になるクーポン！ブヒ、ブヒ！
でも、コロンバス周辺には二日しか滞在しないのよ・・・。
しか〜し！二日後、空港に行く途中によって２ダースのドーナツを購入。１０ドル弱。

これにより、本物のぶたちゃんに変身、現在に至る。ぶひ〜ん！

アーミッシュキルト （パッチワーク）

There are many quilt shops in Amish Country.
I don't sew, so me in a quilt shop is like a pig with pearls.
My sister is a quilter so we visited most of the quilt shops.

Amish people help each other.
They built barns together. They quilt together.
They reminded me of the word, "quilting bee".

One of the shops has a small quilt museum and they show some Amish quilters working on a quilt. I wish we were allowed to take pictures of Amish ladies there.
There is a bed and breakfast where you can enjoy quilting.

アーミッシュカントリーにはたくさんのキルト（パッチワーク）ショップがあります。
わたしは洋裁は（も？）できないので、わたしがキルトショップにいる図はまさに「豚に真珠」です。
（文字通り「ぶた」）
姉はパッチワークをするので、だいたいのキルトショップを訪れました。

アーミッシュの人達はお互いに助け合います。
小屋を建てるのもいっしょ、キルトも一緒にします。
"quilting bee"という言葉を思い出しました。

ちょっとしたキルトミュージアムがある店もあり、アーミッシュ（またはメノナイト）のご婦人たちがキルトを作っているところを見せてくれます。写真がだめなので残念でした。

キルトを楽しめるB&Bもあります。

I like covered bridges ( ever since I read "The Bridges of Madison County" ), so this is my favorite.

屋根付き橋がすきなので（「マディソン郡の橋」を読んで以来）、これが一番気に入りました。

This is a quilt shop in Charm on route 557.
It is off the main roads, but the shop was very big.
If you are a quilter, do visit this shop, "Miller's Dry Goods Quilts".

５５７号線沿い、Charm（町の名前もカワイイ）のキルトショップ。
幹線沿いではないけど、大きいお店でした。
キルトをやる人はぜひ行ってみてください。お店の名前は　"Miller's Dry Goods Quilts"

This is behind the quilt shop above.
The laundry, the covered bridge, and the corn field are a nice match.

洗濯物と、屋根つきのはし、トウモロコシ畑がナイスマッチです。

↑　↓　This is an Amish home/shop off the beaten paths.
The driver took us to this home, where they sell quilts, and we took a glance of what a real Amish home was like.
I didn't notice, but the sign says "Swartzentruber".
It's the name of the strictest Amish, so the people in the house/shop must have been Swarzentrubers.

人里はなれたアーミッシュの家兼お店。
ツアーのドライバーが連れて行ってくれました。
家のなかでキルトを売っているので、本当のアーミッシュの家をちょっと見ることができました。
そのときは気づかなかったけど、看板に"Swartzentruber"と書いてあります。
それはアーミッシュのなかでも一番厳格な派の名前なので、この家にすんでいるひとたちはきっとその"Swartzentruber"だったようです。

アーミッシュの少女

アーミッシュの学校は１年から８年までしかないので１４歳から働き始めます。

道端でかごをうっているアーミッシュらしき人がいたので、かごはかさ張って持って帰れないから買えないけどなあ、と思いつつちょっと見てみることにしました。
売っていたのは１４歳のアーミッシュの少女でした。

アーミッシュの少女　：　どこからきたの？

わたし　：　日本から。

少女　　：　それってどのくらい遠いの？

わたし　：　飛行機で１１〜１２時間くらい。

少女　　：　飛行機って車より速いんでしょ？

わたし　：　（しばし絶句。）そうよ、（飛行機で１２時間がわからないのなら、）いまオハイオは午後５時だけど、日本は朝の６時よ。

少女　　：　（ちょっと驚いた顔つきで）　どうしてわかるの？

わたし　：　（ふたたびしばし絶句）どうって・・・地球は丸いから・・・。

「地球は丸いから」といっても、多分アーミッシュの学校では科学というものを教えな
いかもしれないから、わからなかったかも。

写真は、少女がバスケットを売っていた様子です。
写真を撮るのはだめなので、とおくからそっと撮りました。
小さく写っているふたりの人影は少女の幼い兄弟のようでした。
馬と馬車があったので、自分で運転するのかきいたら、そうだといってました。

１４歳の少女が幼い兄弟の面倒を見ながら道端でバスケットを売っているとは。

純粋な瞳がとても印象的なアーミッシュの少女でした。

アーミッシュの人はアーミッシュではない人と交流するのを避けているのかと思ってたけど、今回人里離れたところをまわってくれる２時間のツアーに参加したら、向こうから手を振ってくれるアーミッシュの人たち、特に子供たちが多くて、案外友好的な人達なんだな、と思いました。

アーミッシュカントリーは大きな道路からの眺めもすごくきれいなので、わざわざツアーに参加しなくても・・と思ったのですが、もっと美しい場所に連れて行ってくれました。アーミッシュカントリーに言ったら、このツアーは必見です。ひとり２９ドル。
この２時間のツアー後、アーミッシュのお宅で夕食を食べるコースもあって、それに参加したかったけど、人数が集まらなかったとかでできませんでした。
前回はアーミッシュのお宅での夕食を経験してすごくおいしかったです。

Amish people go to school only for eight years. They start working at the age of 14.

We saw someone who looked like Amish selling baskets on a roadside, so we pulled over and took a look, though baskets were bulky so that we didn’t want to buy them. The vender was a 14-year-old Amish girl.

The Amish girl : Where are you from?

Me : We are from Japan.

The Amish girl : How far is it?

Me : Well, it takes about 11 – 12 hours to get to the U.S. by airplane.

The Amish girl : Airplanes go faster than cars, right?

Me : (For a while, I lost words.)　Yes.

It is 5:00 pm in Ohio now, but in Japan it is 6:00 in the morning.
(I thought this explanation was easier for her to understand the distance

from the U.S. to Japan.)

The Amish girl : （Looked amazed） How do you know!?

Me　 : ( I lost words again for a while.) Well….. the earth is round, so…..

The earth is round. Amish people may not learn this fact in school so she might not have understood.

The picture above is the place where she was selling baskets.
Being in a picture is said not to be allowed for Amish people, so I took it from far away.
The two persons in the picture seemed to be the Amish girl’s small siblings.
There were a horse and a buggy, so I asked her if she drove it and she said yes.

I’ll remember her pure eyes for a long time.

I had thought Amish people did not want to have contact with non-Amish people before I visited there this time. But we joined a 2-hour tour which took us off-the-beaten paths and I was surprised that Amish people were very friendly, especially many children waved to us.

As the views from main roads in Amish country are very beautiful, I had thought we didn’t need to join a tour, but I was wrong. They took us even more beautiful places.
If you ever visit the area, you must join the tour. The admission is $29 per person.
There is a tour in which we have dinner at an Amish house after the two hour tour I joined. We wanted to join the tour with the dinner, but we couldn’t as there weren’t enough number of people.
Last time, I had dinner at an Amish house. It was really delicious.

ついにまたきました！　Ohio Amish Country!　♡♡♡

Here I am again! Ohio Amish Country!

アーミッシュというのは、１８世紀に宗教的迫害を逃れてアメリカにわたってきた人たちで、最初ペンシルバニアに住み着いたため、ペンシルバニアダッチと呼ばれているアーミッシュの方が有名だけど、人口はオハイオのアーミッシュの方がおおい。オハイオのアーミッシュの人口は、４５，０００〜５０，０００くらいとガイドの人が言ってました。
ヨーロッパにはもういなくて、カナダとアメリカに居住しています。

Amish are religious people who came to the U.S. in the 18th century to escape from the religious prosecution.
First they settled in Pennsylvania and still now Amish people who are called Pennsylvania Dutch are more famous. But the population of Amish in Ohio is around 45,000 to 50,000 and it is bigger. Amish people live in Canada and the U.S. and not in Europe now.

日本では２０年位前の「刑事ジョンブック　目撃者」という映画で多少知られることになり、最近ではペンシルバニアのアーミッシュの学校での乱射事件の際、「わたしを最初に撃って」と犠牲になった少女や、その後アーミッシュの人達が犯人のお葬式に参列し、「犯人を許します」と家族に言った、というようなことでちょっと話題になりました。

Amish became a bit known in Japan when a movie called “Detective John Book / Witness” was played about 20 years ago.
Recently they made a headline when there was a school shooting at an Amish school in Pennsylvania. An Amish girl volunteered to be shot first, and after the incident Amish people attended the funeral of the perpetrator and told his family that they had forgiven him.

宗教革命の際、カソリックから幾多のプロテスタントが分かれたようですが、そのうちのメノナイトからまた分かれたのがアーミッシュで、１８世紀の生活様式をそのまままもっています。車は使わず、馬車が日常の交通手段、電気は使わず農業や家具製作などで生計をたてています。
とはいえ、アーミッシュにもいろいろあるらしく、現代の生活様式を取り入れるのに寛容な　New Order とか、昔の生活様式を守ろうと努力している　Old Order　、そしてOld Orderのなかで特に厳しいのがSwartzentruber。
アーミッシュカントリーといってもアーミッシュだけが住んでいる地区があるのではなく、広い範囲に、彼らがEnglishとよぶ普通のアメリカ人に混じって住んでいます。

At the Radical Reformation, a lot of Protestant groups derived from the Catholic.
One of them was Mennonite, and later Amish derived from Mennonite.
Amish people have tried to preserve the lifestyle of the 18th century.
They don’t use automobiles; instead they use horse-drawn buggies as daily transportation. They do not use electricity and make a living with farming, furniture making, and so on.
But, there are many kinds of Amish; groups who are tolerate about adapting modern technology are called “New Order”, those who TRY to preserve the lifestyle of 18th century are called “Old Order.” Among “Old Order”, the most strict group is called “Swartzentruber”.
We call the area “Amish Country”, but it does not mean there is a kind of reserve for Amish people. They live here and there in a large area among ordinary Americans, who they call “English”.

アーミッシュカントリーに近づいてきて、こういった馬車を見かけるたらそこはもうアーミッシュカントリー〜〜〜。
アーミッシュの人は写真を撮ることを許されていない（諸説あり）とよく言われているので、うしろからこっそり撮ります。
馬車なので、道路にはそこここに　馬糞　が・・・。自転車に乗っているアーミッシュらしき人もよくいます。

アーミッシュの人にとって日曜日は休息日なので、日曜日よりも平日のほうが馬車をよく見れるそうです。それに、お店も日曜日はお休みが多くて、訪れる際は気をつけてください。

When you are headed to Amish Country, and come across this kind of horse-drawn buggies, here you are in Amish Country!
It is said Amish people are not allowed to be taken pictures (though there are some theories), so we took this stealthily from behind. As horses draw buggies, there are a lot of their droppings. Amish people on bake are also commonly seen.

As Sunday is the rest day, I heard we see more buggies on weekdays. And many of the stores in the area are closed on Sundays. If you ever plan to visit there, you need to keep that in mind.

Cars and buggies share the roads, so there are signs like this.　↓
