英語学習にくじけそうになったら・・・

が〜ん、11時59分にアップしたつもりなのに、0時を過ぎてしまった。

わたしのこと、シンデレラって呼んでくださってもかまわないことよ。

少し前、「魔女の何とか」というテレビ番組を見ていたら、ダイエットに成功したひとが出ていた。

彼女は運動や食事を制限してダイエットをしてたのだが、くじけそうになってしまった。ここまではよくある話で、その後どうしたかというと、手帳にみんなから褒めてもらったことを書きとめて、くじけそうになった時にそれを読み返して、ダイエットにがんばったということでした。
「このごろ痩せたんじゃない？」とか「やせてきれいになったね。」とか誰に言われたかも書いて読み返すようにしたそうです。

それをみて、これは英語学習にも使える！と思ったわたしでした。・・・英語オタクはなんでも英語に結びつける。お〜、いやだ。

でも、本当に必要なのは、英語学習用おほめの言葉ノートじゃなくて、素直にダイエット用おほめの言葉ノートでは・・・？と、でぶりんこのおなかをみて思ったりもするのでした〜。^^;


Some time ago, I watched a TV show titled "Majono something".
There was this girl who suceeded in losing weight by working out and being on a diet. While she was trying to lose weight, sometimes she was about to give up.
So far nothing is new.
What she did was that she wrote down compliments she got from people and read them when she was about to give in. She wrote down compliments like "Haven't you lose some weight?", "You've lost weight and look nice." on a notebook with the names of people who said those.

Watching that, I thought I could use the method in studying English... English nurds associate anything with English. Give me a break.

But, what I really need is not a notebook full of compliments for my English, but is a notebook for losing weight. I thought this watching my potbelly...

中高年よ、英語学習に立ち上がれ！２

In the last entry but one, I dwelled on the ability of the middle-aged and elderly people to memorize English words.
But I forgot to mention what made me want to write it.
As I am getting older, I am getting more forgetful. I wish I were young again. “Oh, we promised we would not say that, Dad….” (Too ancient a gag!)

Close to the back of the textbook, “Business English”, an NHK English language program, there is a section called “Business word Power”.
It’s an exam with multiple-choice questions.
For the past two issues, I got a full mark, which is very unusual and which I am sure is just a fluke.
Of course, I didn’t know all the words in the exams. Very often I know only two or three words out of the given four.

I recalled when the section started.
Back then, in the mid-90s, points were given to the questions based on the difficulty, and I remember my scores were far from full marks.
I took a look at the old textbooks and I found my score was 71, 79, 63, and even 53!!
You may think that I have improved my English since then, but lo and behold, at that time I had already passed Eiken 1-kyuu.
So, doing the exam, I remember I thought, “Isn’t this exam too difficult? Where will I encounter these words?”

And now I can answer all questions right even by dumb luck.
I guess even though my English has not been improved greatly, I have been exposed to English words/expressions/idioms/sentences more than me when I was young and bouncing (just joking) at the present age minus 12 years old.
This made me think “The older you are, the easier it is to memorize English words.”

ふたつ前の記事で、中高年の英単語を覚える能力について書きましたが、なぜその記事を書きたくなったのかを述べるのを忘れておりました。
年をとるほど忘れっぽくなるのだ。I wish I were younger again. それは言わない約束でしょ、おっとさん。（古い、古すぎる！）

NHK語学講座“ビジネス英会話”の巻末に“Business Word Power”という四択問題のコーナーがあります。
最近２回続けて、満点でした。これは、わたしにとってはすごく珍しい。まぐれであることはわたし本人がよーくわかっております。
もちろん四択のすべての単語が分かっているわけではなく、知っているのはたいてい２，３個だけです。

このコーナーが始まった頃のことを思い出してみた。
１９９０年代中ごろだと思うけど、難易度別に得点がついていて計算できるようになっていた。そして、わたしの得点はいつも満点には程遠いものだった。
古いテキストを見てみたら、７１点、７９点、６３点、とか５３点なんてのもありました。
それから、英語が上達したのね、と思われるかもしれませんが、な〜んと、そのときわたしは既に英検１級合格済みだったんです！
それで、やりながら「このテスト難しすぎない？」とか「こんな単語どこで使うの？」とか思っていた覚えがあります。

そして、現在、まぐれでも満点を取るようになった！（日本語で書くと、とても自慢っぽい。）
英語自体はたいして上達してないけど、いまより１２才若かったピチピチギャル（うそ）のわたしより、より多くの英単語・表現・慣用語句・文章にふれてきたからじゃないかと思う。
それで、「年をとったほうが、英語を覚えやすい」という内容の記事になったわけです。

中高年よ、英語学習に立ち上がれ！

A lot of elderly English learners complain like “I am getting older, so it is really hard to memorize words now. I wish I were young again.”　And they say in a woeful manner, “The proverb is right. You can never teach an old dog new tricks, right?”
Ok, ok, it was my mistake to have taught you such a proverb.

One of the myths about studying English is, I believe, “the older you are, the harder it is to memorize words.”

First, the older you are, the more times you have had encountered English words, even Japanese English.

Second, the older you are, the more experience you have in whatever field you were. A lot of technical words often come from English. It’s true for housewives, too. The famous long-life curry, “kukure curry”, was named from “cookless curry”, though the word “coolkess” is not an English word. Oh, this is not a technical word for housewives only. (^_^;)

Third, the longer you have studied English, the more memorable moments you have had, like “This is the word the teacher from Australia taught me.”, “I used this word before, but back then, my pronunciation was bad and I couldn’t make myself understood.” “I learned this word in that story.” and so on. You can never forget those memorable words.

So let’s not make our age an excuse and study hard! We can do it! Let’s go!
(Preaching like this, am I studying hard? Err, err, err.....running away, away, away....gone.)


P.S.
We, the middle-aged and the elderly, have another advantage.
Most of us have been abroad and we know firsthand how interesting it will be if we speak English.
Most students study English but they can't picture themselves using it in a foreign country.
But we can!




英語学習者でちょっとお年を召した方の多くがこうこぼす。
「年とってきちゃってるからねえ、もう単語を覚えられないんですよ。若返れたらと思いますよ。」
そして、情けなさそうにこう続く。
「ほんとにことわざのいうとおりですよ。“年をとった犬に新しい芸を教え込むことはできない。”ってねえ？」
はいはい、そんなことわざを教えたわたしが悪うござんした。

「年をとるほど、単語が覚えられなくなる。」というのは英語学習のうそのひとつだと信じている。

第一に、年をとっている人ほど、カタカナ英語でも英語の単語に触れた回数が多いはずであ〜る。

第二に、年をとっている人ほど、どんな業種においてでも経験が多い。専門用語には英語が多い。主婦でも同じ。ククレカレーは　Cookless Curry から名づけられたのだ。cookless なんて英単語はないけど。って、これは主婦用語じゃないですね。(^_^;)

第三に、長く英語を勉強していればしているほど、単語に関する思い出が多い。例えば、「これはオーストラリアから来た先生が教えてくれた単語だ。」とか「前にこの語を使ったら、発音が悪くて通じなかった。」とか「あのお話で出てきた単語だ！」などなど。思い出のある単語は忘れられない。

だから、年のせいにするのはやめて勉強しましょう。We can do it! Let’s go!
（そんなこと言って、自分は勉強しているのかい！？・・・って、え？え？え？・・・すたこらさっさ〜）

追伸
我ら、中高年にはもうひとつ利点があります。
たいていの人は海外旅行に行ったことがあり、英語を話せたらどんなに面白いだろうかということを直接の体験から知っている。
学生は英語を勉強しながら、自分が海外で英語を使っている様子を想像できない子が多い。
でも、我ら中高年はできるのだ！
