ヘンリー・カウエル「牧場」(1944)「水たまり」(1958) ( その他音楽 ) - 風のクラシック

ケージが音楽を学んだカウエル(Henry Cowell 1897-1965)の歌のCDを見つけた。
ロバート・フロスト(1874-1963)の詩が２つあった。
fminorop34さんのフロストのページを探したら、ちょうど発見したので、これ幸いと参考にさせていただいた。

The Pasture

I'm going out to clean the pasture spring;
I'll only stop to rake the leaves away
(And wait to watch the water clear, I may)
I sha'nt be gone long. - You come too.

I'm going out to fetch the little calf
That's standing by the mother. It's so young
It totters when she licks it with her tongue.

牧場

ぼくは牧場の泉を掃除しに出かけるところ
ちょっと足を止めて落ち葉を掃うだけさ
（そして水が澄むのを待つんだ）
長くはかからないさ‐君もおいでよ。

ぼくは子牛を連れ戻しに出かけるところ
そいつは母牛のそばに立ってる。小ちゃいんだ。
母牛が舌でなめてやるとふらついちゃうんだ。
長くはかからないさ‐君もおいでよ。

瑞々しいピアノ、水を感じさせる。
たいへんさわやかだ。
さわやかの田舎の風景が浮かぶ。
ケージのアリアのような変なのだったら困ったなあと思ったけれど、まともな歌だった。

Spring Pools

These pools that, though in forest, still reflect
The total sky almost without defect,
And like the flowers beside them, chill and shiver,
Will like the flowers beside them, soon be gone,
And yet not out by any brook or river,
But up by roots to bring dark foliage on.

The trees that have it in their pent-up buds
To darken nature and be summer woods -
Let them think twice before they use their powers
To blot out and drink up and sweep away
These flowery waters and these watery flowers
From snow that melted only yesterday.

春の水たまり

森の中なのに、この水たまりたちは映し出している
空のほとんどすべてを、
そしてそのそばに咲く花のように、冷たく身震いしている、
きっとそのそばに咲く花のように、すぐに消えてしまうだろう、
でもせせらぎや川に注ぐのではなく
根から上がってうっそうとした葉を育てるのだ

閉じたつぼみにそれを含んだ木々が
影を作り夏の森を作る‐
木々にその力を使う前に二度思い巡らしてほしい

覆い、飲み干し、払いのける力を使う前に
花のようにはかない水たまりと水たまりに咲く花のことを
昨日解けたばかりの雪から生まれたものたちのことを

これもたいへん瑞々しく、美しい。
たぶんフロストの詩から受けるイメージがそうさせるのだろう。
フロストがいかなる詩人だったか、fminorop34さんのサイトで勉強せねばならない。
はかない水たまりとそこに咲く春の可憐な花を歌う。
さわやかないい歌だ。

三省堂の音楽作品名辞典にはカウエルの歌が載っていない。
ピアノの鍵盤を腕で叩くトーン・クラスターの技法やピアノ内部の弦を叩くこともケージに先立ってやっているようだ。
