Sunflower, Compositae / Asteraceae Native Americans ground sunflower seeds for bread flour and for oil used in cooking and for dressing hair. In the 19th century it was believed that growing Common Sunflower near the home would protect the occupants from Malaria. Recent uses include silage (cattle feed) and oil for cooking and soap. ___ National Audubon Society / Field Guide to Wildflowers
