アラン・チャンがAlessiとお茶の道具を作った。

（以下にアラン・チャンのデザインについて過去に書いた文章）

アランのデザインのコンセプトは「イースト・ミーツ・ウエスト」と、

いかにも英国文化と中国文化の交わる香港という土地で生まれ育った彼らしい。

西にも東にも偏らず、ちょうど良いバランスを保ってデザインできるセンスが、

色々な文化を持つ世界中の人々に受け入れられるためには不可欠なのだろうと思う。

そのセンスは、アメリカを代表する企業ブランド、

コカ・コーラとミッキー・マウスを中国へローカライズした際にも生かされている。

コカ・コーラの世界一有名な企業ロゴは、

英語のロゴを国ごとにローカライズさせないことで有名だが、中国で売られているコークには、

アランのデザインした不思議な漢字のロゴマークが採用された。

英語の基本ロゴとうまく調和されているので、もし漢字が読めない外国人がロゴを見たとしても、

コカ･コーラのものだとわかる。また、ミッキーとその仲間には、

なんとアジア地域では有名な「西遊記」の衣装を着せている。

どちらも、アメリカでデザインされたままよりも、

中国の人々には親しみを持って受け入れられやすいと思う。

彼のインスピレーションの源は、中国や欧米に留まらない。

日本からも色々なヒントを得ているようだ。

さしずめ「イースト・ミーツ・イースト」と言えるだろう。

三井住友フィナンシャルグループの（シンボル）をデザインした時のプレゼンテーションでは、

三井の「三」と住友の「Ｓ」をモチーフにして、

グループの経営状況が今後右肩上がりに向かうようにデザインした、と言ったらしい。

優れたデザイナーはプレゼンテーションもうまい。

実は、このデザインの発想の源（原型）は、東郷神社のフリーマーケットにあった。

そこで売られていた古い屏風をヒントにしたのだった。

見たモノをスキャナーのように自らのデータベースに取り込んで、

すぐに活用してしまう手腕は見事だ。

Alessi x Alan Chan – “Tea Matter” 2010

 

The “Tea Matter” is the first collaboration project of Alan Chan with world famous Italian design brand, Alessi, it could be defined as a modern communication project which contains several items.

 

The tea strainer comes in the form of a bird in a birdcage. It was inspired by the social tradition, deeply rooted in Chinese history, with bird-fanciers taking their pet birds in exquisite birdcage to tea as a past-time. The whole object, highly crafted, is an art display in itself. It also combines the elegant lifestyle of the elites in history with the pleasurable tea drinking experience enjoyed by individuals in everyday life.

 

“Tea Matter” consists of a birdcage that contains a bird-inspired tea strainer: when the tea strainer is lifted out so it can be used, the melodic sound of a bird chirping can be heard. The tea strainer can be accompanied by the “Tea Matter”, tea caddies, one of which decorated with a design inspired by Chinese lithographic limestone of around Ching dynasty, and the other with handwriting designs that form a Song Dynasty (960-1279) poem dedicated to the ritual of tea. The phrase means “having a pure heart is possible" and can be read beginning with any character.
