地球規模の食糧危機は、１億人を脅かす「静かな津波である」と国連は警告している

22 April 2008 – The head of the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) today called for urgent action to tackle the “silent tsunami” of rising food prices which threatens to push more than 100 million people worldwide into hunger.

２００８年４月２２日―国連世界食糧計画（WFP）は、世界中で１億人を超える人々を飢餓に追いやる恐れがある高まりつつある食糧価格の「静かな津波」に取り組むための緊急行動を今日要請した。

“This is the new face of hunger – the millions of people who were not in the urgent hunger category six months ago but now are,” said WFP Executive Director Josette Sheeran, after addressing a British parliamentary hearing in London.

「これが飢餓の新しい様相です。６カ月前には緊急飢餓の範疇には入っていなかった数１００万の人々が現在ではその範疇に入っているのです。」と、国連世界食糧計画の重役ジョゼット・シェランは、ロンドンで行われたイギリス国会公聴会の後に述べた。

She said that like the 2004 tsunami, which hit the Indian Ocean leaving quarter of a million dead and about 10 million more destitute, the food price crisis – the biggest challenge WFP has faced in its 45-year history – requires a global response.

インド洋を襲い、１００万人の死者と約１０００万人のひとびとを更なる貧困に追いやった地域を残した２００４年の津波と同じように、WFPがその４５年の歴史の中で直面しているこのもっとも大きな挑戦は、世界規模での応答（協力）を必要としている。

“The response calls for large-scale, high-level action by the global community, focused on emergency and longer-term solutions,” she added.

「その応答は、緊急で長期的な諸々の解決方法に焦点を当てた地球規模での共同体による、広範で高いレベルの行動を必要としているのです。」と、彼女は付け加えた。
