21 March 2008 – Racism still hurts too many individuals and communities around the world, Secretary-Ban Ki-moon said today, calling on all countries and civil society groups to play their part in the fight to stamp out both racism and racial discrimination.

２００８年３月21日―人種主義はいまだに世界中であまりにも多くの個人や集団を傷つけていると、バン・キ＝ムーン事務総長は述べ、すべての国々や市民社会団体に対し、人種主義や人種差別を撤廃するための闘いに参加するよう呼び掛けた。

In a message to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, which is celebrated today, Mr. Ban said next year's formal review of actions taken since the 2001 World Conference against Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia.

今日祝われた国際人種差別撤廃デーのメッセージのなかで、来年は、人種主義、人種差別、排外主義に対する２００１年世界会議以来取られた諸措置を公式に見直す年であるとバン氏は述べた。

“Racial discrimination is a concern to all peoples and countries,” he said. “This review process is an opportunity to engage in an inclusive and transparent manner on an issue that demands our urgent and close attention.

「人種差別はすべての民族とすべての国々に関係しています」と彼は述べた。「見直しの過程は、急を要し、且つ注視すべき問題について包括的で透明な方法を取る機会となります。」

“I call on all countries and civil society to make constructive use of the time between now and the formal review process to work out their differences so that we can seize this opening to boost our collective efforts to stamp out racism. This issue is too important; we cannot fail.”

「わたしはすべての国と市民社会に対し、それらの意見の相違を解決するため、現在から公式な見直しの過程が行われる間の時間を建設的に使うようにと呼びかけます。そうすれば、われわれはこの見直しの年の始まりを、人種主義を廃絶するための集団的な努力を引き上げるための機会とすることができるでしょう。」

The Secretary-General noted that the General Assembly proclaimed 21 March as the International Day to honour the memory of the scores of peaceful protesters who were massacred on this day in 1960 in the South African township of Sharpeville as they demonstrated against the racist apartheid-era 'pass laws.'

事務総長はよると、南アフリカのシャープヴィルという町で、人種主義的なアパルトヘイト地区の「パス法」に対して示威運動をしたために、１９６０年のこの日に無差別に殺された多くの平和の主張者たちに敬意を表して、３月２１日を国際デーとして国民議会は宣言した。

“There has been significant progress since then, not least through the dismantling of the apartheid system. But racism continues to plague too many individuals, communities and societies the world over.”

6 March 2008 – The head of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) today highlighted the crucial role that football can play in tackling poverty and hunger, applauding a new agreement signed between the agency and the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

２００８年３月６日―国連食糧農業機関のリーダーは今日、サッカーが貧困と飢餓の問題と取り組むために極めて重要な役割を演じることを強調し、アフリカサッカー機関とアフリカサッカー連盟の間で交わされた新しい合意を評価した。

“FAO has always set great store by the power of sport in general, and professional football in particular, as a tool for peace and development and as a means to mobilize political will and resources in the fight against global hunger,” said Jacques Diouf, the agency’s Director-General.

「国連食糧農業機関は、スポーツ全体、特にプロサッカーの力を常に重要視しています。平和や発展へ向かうためのひとつの手段として、また飢餓全体に対する戦いにおける政治的な意志や手段を動かすための方法としての力を持っているのです。」と、アフリカサッカー機関の総取締役であるジャック・ジュッフは述べた。

The CAF – and its members, affiliated football clubs and professional players – and FAO have agreed to join forces to raise awareness on food security issues. The football group will support FAO campaigns, including national and regional Food Security Programmes.

アフリカサッカー協会―諸サッカークラブの会員やプロのサッカー選手たちー、として国連食糧農業機関は、力を合わせて、食糧安全問題に対する意識を高めることに対し合意した。アフリカサッカー協会は、国内、地域別の「食糧安全プログラム」を含む国連食糧農業機関のキャンペーンを支持する予定である。

The two organizations hope the new partnership will allow football to become a vehicle for bolstering the living conditions for the world’s poorest.

二つの機関は、その新しいパートナーシップにより、サッカーが、世界で一番貧しい人たちの生活状況を改善するための手段としての機関になることを願っている。

With this new deal, the CAF will join the ranks of other footballers – including star players and FAO Goodwill Ambassadors such as Roberto Baggio, formerly with the Italian clubs Juventus and Inter, and Real Madrid captain Raúl Gonzalez – seeking to bring an end to hunger worldwide.

この新しい契約で、世界中の飢餓に終止符を打つことを目指し、アフリカサッカー連盟は、これまでのイタリアのクラブのユベントスやインテル（ミラノ）、レアル・マドリッドのキャプテン、ポール・ゴンザレスたちのリストに、スター選手たちやロベルト・バッキョのような国連食糧農業機関の親善大使たちの名も書き入れられることになる。
