二宮金次郎像
境島小学校のソメイヨシノを撮りに来た。ここの小学校へは１７年前、まだ境町町立島小学校の時以来である。当時二宮金次郎像（以後ニノキン）を追っ掛け始めた。各県のニノキンの残存率を調査するため足掛け八年、群馬、埼玉、栃木、新潟、福島の約３０００の小学校、約１０００体を確認し、約５０００枚の写真を撮った。その労作エッセイは昨年原稿用紙100枚弱にまとめた。機会あれば公表したい。調査の打ち切りは１９９７．ロサンゼルスのリトル・トーキョーのニノキンを撮れるか否や。その年脆くも打ち砕かれた。場違いなアメリカ摩天楼に佇むニノキンを、この目でしかとみることはできなかった。以後ニノキンの調査は行っていない。境島小学校を思い立ったのは、私の記憶する限り群馬県内で一番良いアングルで、桜樹とツーショットできる唯一の小学校だからである。小学校に桜は定番で入学式の桜吹雪はお似合いの国家的風物詩になった。しかし意外に桜の木の下にニノキンはいないのである。桜は校庭の隅を囲うがニノキンは正面入り口、玄関入り口にいる効率が高い。校庭にはこれも多い松の木の下とか、花壇の中にニノキンは佇んでいる比率が高い。桜の木と並列にあるニノキンは余りないのである。その点境島小学校のニノキンは樹齢50年の立派な桜木の下で、一心不乱に本を読んでいる。
私の桜への傾倒は日も浅いので、気のきいたメッセージはできないが、境島小学校のソメイヨシノは一本桜ゆえに、花にボリュームがあり非常に見栄えがする。立ち並ぶ桜は窮屈そうに上へ上へ枝を伸ばし、花が湧き上がるように見えるが、一本桜はゆったりと枝を横に広げ、ニノキンを上から包み丁度傘のように、庇護している風に見える。そこに桜吹雪がサァーと舞い落ちる風情は、ファンとしては堪らない桜源郷だ。葉桜となり、紅葉に色付き、枯れ木となっても一年中四季の変化を伝え目を楽しませてくれる。S32年、環境は同じだったか知る由もないが、植樹してくれた方のセンスの良さに感謝する。It came to take a Someiyoshino cherry tree in the Sakai sima elementary school.
