２００７．４月。行ける限り県内の桜を観賞、撮影して廻った。桜シーズンは
桜下にシートを敷いて浮かれている連中のイメージが強く、進んで観賞する機会を避けてきたが、日中各名所を尋ね歩くとたくさんの真面目な桜シンパがいて、情報交換も出来た。桜ファンは毎年この季節になると、お気に入りの桜狩りを転々とするらしい。様々な感嘆の声に接すると、日本人は本当に「桜が好きなんだナァ！」胸に芽生えた実感である。
一番印象に残ったのは満開時に見た沼田市一連の桜である。力強い瘤の出来た幹、ビッシリと咲きほころぶ花びら。車走行中そこここに出没する年季の入ったソメイヨシノやシダレ桜は、手入れも行き届き、里ではプレートを貼って大騒ぎしそうな豪勢な桜大木が、名もなく、邪魔もせずいくつも咲いている。
桜町という町名もある位だから、市民の桜への愛着、思い入れは相当甚大である。沼田公園ではライトアップの時刻までいられなかったが、市民総出で桜をシーズンいっぱい、昼夜いっぱい惜しみなく目に焼き付けておこうという、貪欲な精神が羨ましい。この公園を造った久米民之助さんの遺志が、市民に反映、浸透しているようだ。私もここで生まれたら、もっと早く桜ファンになっていただろう。私は幼少時代、前橋公園の近くに住んでいたが、桜は商売道具であり、酔客狼藉者の場所だった。とても観賞に値するものではなかった。沼田市の幹線道路を走ると、大きな丈の太い桜が幾つも出現する。それを上手に残し
又は移動して、桜が道路と共存している情景が目に付く。昔前橋市が道路拡張の時前橋公園付近にあった、樹齢？年の大ケヤキを大半伐採してしまった。伐採反対の札が欅に淋しく取り付けられているのを、少年期見たことがある。沼田市も同じ経済成長期の中でこうした難問はあったろうと思う。行政が如何に自然と経済効果とのバランス調和を天秤にかけ、対処できたのか、よそ者には「うまくいってる！」と表面だけしか見えないが、そう思うのである。しかし残念ながら期待した呼び物の御殿桜（彼岸桜）は散ってしまい、ソメイヨシノの桜吹雪に被われた。まるで雪の真っ只中名物の火の見櫓を見るようだった。発知の桜も今春は花づきが良くないと村人が言っていた。例年より気温の低い日が続いたせいか、「オー!」と言う喚声は心奥から起こらなかった。全般的にみれば、私が見た今年の桜ベスト１は沼田市一連の桜である。この時期沼田市一帯は桜地帯といえる。桜カメラマンに言わせると、日本の桜の宝庫は長野・福島だという。群馬の桜の宝庫は私に言わせると確実に沼田だ！！市の木が桜だというのが象徴的だ。しかし単体の一本桜で何が一等賞の桜かと言えば、桜森（元赤城村）のベニタチヒガン桜：樹齢４００年を挙げたい。日陰のジメジメした所に屹立していたこの桜は、傷みもひどかったが、椰子の木肌のような幹皮には感動すら覚えた。
今まで桜の幹は黒っぽいものと思っていたが、よその国の桜のような地肌をしていた。又、愛機コニカ（１９８９購入）のフィルムが終わり、慣れないマダムビーズのデジカメ（ソニー：サイバーショット）で撮ったため、ダイヤルが録画に移行していたのに気付かず、何枚かシャッターを押した。今の所その動画をプリント出来る手立てがない。どうにかプリントした二枚の写真を見れば、桜らしくない桜として堂々の一等賞と言える。この時残念ながらマダムビーズは写真を撮れなかった。一枚でもシャッターを押してくれたら、傑作が撮れていたかもしれない。怨みの桜森でもある。この一帯は地名から察するに桜がいっぱい咲いていたのだろう。安吾作“桜の森の満開の下”を彷彿させる万華鏡がきっと広がっていたのだ。
4/２９ これでもか、これでもかの桜づくしの旅を完了した。終着桜は白沢町の石割桜と最近上毛新聞に載った、利根町山妻有の桜である。前者のカスミサクラは残念乍ら散っていたが、沢の大岩から割ってそそり立つ古桜の生命力は圧巻であった。咲いていれば壮観この上なかったが、こちらの情報不足であった。
山妻有の江戸彼岸桜は今年２月、市指定文化財になった。もっと早くなってって当たり前の貫禄十分な桜で町村合併の功労といえる。雄大で豪華な花づきが世間で話題になるのも、そう遠くないだろう。今まで世に知られてなかったのが、不思議に思える位、凛として立派な桜である。２００７．最後を飾るにふさわしい桜を見て、観賞会の幕を閉じる。2007. April
